Hola todos! Hoy les quiero compartir mi ultima aventura pintando un mural en una zona popular de Caracas, Venezuela, llamada La Vega. El tema que se eligió fue el derecho a la vida. Sobre todo por los acontecimientos recientes que vivieron los habitantes de esa zona con los encuentros armados entre criminales y las fuerzas de seguridad del país.
Hello everyone! Today I want to share with you my last adventure painting a wall in a popular area of Caracas, Venezuela, called La Vega. The chosen theme was the right to life. Especially because of the recent events experienced by the residents of that area with the armed encounters between criminals and the security forces of the country.
Una de las cosas que mas me gusta de hacer murales en estas comunidades es vivir el proceso de transformación por el que pasa el lugar mientras vamos pintando que incluye a las personas que hacen vida al rededor. Uno de estos ejemplos fue la señora a la que llaman "la Catira" que es la dueña del quiosco que está en la parada donde realizamos el mural. Claramente su negocio se estaba viendo directamente beneficiado así que ella estaba muy contenta y nos ofrecía todo el poyo que necesitáramos como acceso al baño, agua e incluso nos regaló unos cambures para poder seguir trabajando.También llamaron a un señor para que limpiara todos los desperdicios que habían en la zona. Hasta los motorizados que utilizan esa parada como punto de partida estaban conversando a cerca de que ellos iban a estar pendientes de conservar el mural después de que lo termináramos.
One of the things I like the most about doing murals in these communities is to experience the process of transformation that the place goes through while we are painting, which includes the people who live around it. One of these examples was the lady they call "la Catira" who is the owner of the stand at the bus stop where we painted the wall. Clearly her business was directly benefiting so she was very satisfied and offered us all the support we needed such as access to the bathroom, water and even gave us some bananas so we could continue working, they also called a man to clean up all the garbage that was in the area. Even the motorcyclists who use that stop as a starting point were talking about how they were going to take care of the mural after we finished it.
Muchas personas al pasar nos preguntaban si estábamos trabajando para el gobierno y les explicábamos que nosotros trabajamos con una ONG llamada Compromiso Compartido; que es la que se encarga de hacer todo el enlace y trabajo con la comunidad. Una de estas actividades es recuperar espacios comunes con intervenciones artísticas.
Many people passing by asked us if we were working for the government and we explained that we work with an NGO called Compromiso Compartido (Shared Commitment), which is in charge of liaising and working with the community. One of these activities is to recover common spaces with artistic interventions.
Les confieso que esta fue la primera vez que me toco trabajar sola con la comunidad. Normalmente está Marianna quien es la que dirige estas actividades y yo la asisto. Pero esta vez ella tuvo que ir a resolver un problema en otra comunidad y yo fui resolviendo todos los detalles. Normalmente yo le pregunto a ella: Y ahora que hacemos? o de que color pintamos esto? En esta ocasión me toco responder esa pregunta a mi muchas veces. Al principio me daba un poco de miedo que algo saliera mal pero poco a poco fui organizando todo y con la ayuda de los voluntarios de la comunidad logramos terminar todo el mural, eso me gusto mucho. En la foto final salen todos los que participaron en el proceso, todos fueron muy amables y colaborativos al trabajar.
I confess that this was the first time I had to work alone with the community. Normally Marianna is the one who directs these activities and I assist her. But this time she had to go to solve a problem in another community and I was solving all the details. Normally I ask her: And now what should we do? or what color should we paint this? This time I had to answer that question many times. At the beginning I was a little afraid that something would go wrong but little by little I was organizing everything and with the help of the community volunteers we were able to finish the whole mural, which I liked a lot. In the final photo are all those who participated in the process, everyone was very kind and collaborative in their work.

It's normal when you feel scared at first. But then you got through it. The result makes the space there look more attractive and brings a cheerful feel.
