Innovative Adventures - Moving from Sketch to Figma: A little design rant

Why moving from Sketch to Figma?

Since a month or so, I've been scanning the job market in order to find new opportunities as a product designer. Which leads me to the following steps: updating my LinkedIn profile, update my resume, updating my portfolio, networking, scanning the job market, talking to recruiters and finding a job.

Now, as someone who's been using Sketch in combination with Abstract for almost 3 years now, it did not come as a surprise that my Figma skills have been neglected. Actually, a lot of companies are using Figma these days and honestly, I do need to brush up on my skills. So, I downloaded Figma like the good girl I am and tried to rebuild a small app I designed.

I worked on it for a bit and finished half-way through. Unfortunately, my frustrations grew so strong that I just wanted to let some steam off.

I really want to like Figma, but...

  1. Everything works with so many clicks. It feels like I have to perform so many actions just to get something simple done.
  2. When I try to add a component to my design, it takes me 3 clicks AND I need to navigate into another tab, which ends up in 4 clicks as I like to have my Layer Panel open. This feels like an unnecessary and tedious process whereas Sketch does this in 2 clicks.
  3. I have to manually move the components I created in a frame/artboard to a separate page. It really is not an option to have master components in frames from an organisational point of view. This again is 2 clicks. Sketch has one as you can just drag the layer of the component to a different page.
  4. Bulk editing text styles is a nightmare. I have to change every individual text style separately. For example, when I want to change my text style to bold it requires 5 clicks: clicking on the component, clicking on the text style, clicking on the edit text style button, clicking on the font-weight dropdown, selecting bold. Sketch does this in 3 clicks and allows for bulk editing. Figma forces me to have 5 clicks for every single text style I want to update.
  5. Image fills can not be filled from clipboard. This means that I need to save the image to my device and import it from there. Adding another 3 clicks to the flow whereas Sketch allows for this and just pastes it in. I had to download a plugin for it to work, whyyyyyyyyyy.

Please tell me there are other ways to do this and/or that I am using it wrong because I really want to like Figma. Definitely happy to have a nice discussion about this!
