Hi Everyone.
I sculpted some gargoyle miniatures in the past. They were stylized, fantasy version of gargoyles. This time I want them to be more realistic. I am basing these on actual gargoyle statues that can be found on Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris.
One of my favorite elements of the Notre-Dame were always creatures inhabiting the upper floors of the cathedral. Each of them strange and unique. Some resemble real animals like birds, reptiles or even elephants. Others took the shapes of fairy-tale dragons or winged demons. The appearance of some of them may be quite disturbing, but large part of them look quite harmless and funny. Each gargoyle seems to have its own story to tell. After all, their stone eyes must have seen quite a bit of history.
They saw, for example, the looting carried out by mobs during the French Revolution as well as the recent fire that consumed a large part of the church's roof. The cathedral certainly hasn't had an easy life, but I'm very glad it's still with us.
I'm in constant awe when I look at it. Every small detail, in even the most inaccessible parts of this cathedral, suspended high away from human sight, was treated with highest attention and care. I have always appreciated this part of old architecture and I greatly miss it in today's sterile looking buildings.
These 3D models are an introduction to a sculpture I am working on and plan to finish in the near future. I wonder if you could guess what it is :)

Yes, there are a lot of out of place elements and other mysteries connected to Gothic cathedrals, gargoyles are only a small part of it. I am working on a character related to these gargoyles. He should be finished soon :)
What a captivating concept! Architecture has definitely been sterilized in recent decades, kind of sad. The old structures are so fascinating.
My curiosity is piqued as to what's next. I am guessing it's some type of castle or similar building. 😁🤷♀️
I love looking at old buildings, there are always some small details hidden up high for me to find. It's a dangerous sport though, you may walk into people/lamp posts etc. which might have happend to me once or twice :)
The next thing is a character. (mystery music)
Haha! That sounds painful, though. What about using a drone to help you find the details up high?
Ah, a character. Hmm, I'm really at a loss. So I guess I'll just wait and see!
I'd love to play with a drone. Positive side of me having one would be me getting outside and away from a screen for a while, negative would be me never getting back because I would be 3D scanning every church in the city. That's tempting.
Hey, everyone needs a worthwhile goal! Drones are a lot of fun. A little change of perspective can make a big difference. Especially when you can apply it to your craft : )
Really cool!
I've always been fascinated by gargoyles and know of a building or two in my hometown where these old things can be seen perched up watching over the city.
It's really cool you're keeping the gargoyles alive through your 3D imaging work.
Thanks for sharing! :) 👍
