Hello everyone! Today I am going to share a painting that I did today. It is the painting of a desert under the moonlight many stars at night.

Tools and Materials

  • an art block
  • a HB pencil
  • a dustfree eraser
  • a small round brush
  • watercolours
  • a container filled with water
  • a tissue
  • a white pencil
  • a yellow colour pencil
  • a white gel pen

The Process

This is the drawing where I just sketched the basic outline of the artwork. I used a HB pencil to draw as it is a hard pencil and the lines will be dark enough to be visible even after layers of paint and not smudge into the painting. I had to go in multiple times to erase the mountain shadow area to get it good enough for my liking.

Here's the first layer of painting. I just used a small round brush and some brown which I created by mixing two different shades. I kept it light and diluted with a lot of water for starters so it will be easier to make adjustments later on.

This looks like milk tea but I assure you that it is not :D It is another brown shade I was mixing. I thought it was interesting because this is how my usual tea looks. Close enough.

I painted the smaller sand dune at the back while waiting for the one in the front to dry. I had to rush so I can get it done before the paint dries off.

I was panicked for a second because the dark brown I attempted to mix was a little too dark. The good thing is water colour dries lighter so it seemed alright later on.

I painted the rest of the dunes and this is how they look now. They look like chocolate mountains and I wish I can eat chocolate now.

I added some golden brown to the highlight of the large sand mountain.

I couldn't wait to paint some blue because I was tired of the monotonous colour where I kept painting brown for quite long. So I painted blue eventhough the rest of the paper was damp.

I painted the entire sky but I did use different variations of blue where I added more black to some.

I experimented with different shades of blue and gradually added black to make some parts darker especially the top region.

Here's the completed artwork. I added many stars on the sky and added a tint of yellow to the moon. I also used a white pencil to colour around the edges of the moon so it looks softer and more natural with some light illuminating all around it. At the end I used a white gel pen as well for so some of the stars look brighter than the others.

This is just another picture of it on my bed. I don't know why but it looks better here than the table.
