Graffiti Lettering Contest Entry #1

in Sketchbook3 years ago (edited)

There's a Graffiti Lettering Contest going on run by @trippymane. I like the idea and want it to be successful, so I threw together an entry to help support the contest.

You can find more details on how to join in this post.

I started with pencil on lined paper. Not ideal but I filled up my sketchbook and haven't purchased a new one yet. My fiance was making meatball subs for lunch and I got the luxury of drawing while she was slaving away. I didn't have a direction I was heading. I put the pencil on the paper and started sketching out these weird arrow-ended letters. The actual letter forms themselves are lacking but I didn't have much space to work with. When you have a 5 letter word you have to either write really small or do some awkwardly skinny letters. I think that's what happend to me here but this is graffiti and graffiti will never be perfect. I kept what I had and went over it with pen.

After I outlined it with pen I began adding shading for the 3D effect. It was very labor intensive drawing a bunch of lines closely next to one another to add tone. As labourous as it is, it's the reason I love the look of pen and ink. I continued to do that and tried not to get lazy with my lines.

Once that was done I started blocking out shapes to color in. I was trying to think of the overall picture so I shaded in the part I was going to color to get a feel of how it would look. I left a few spots open for some decorating inside the fill.

After that it was time to outline the whole piece in black. The first black market I had was dying but luckily I found another one. I outlined it and then added the last black splash effect around the whole thing to add to the composition as a whole. From a distance it looks nice. All of the extra bits I added really make it pop.

The T to R connection is really weak but I chose to add it for the overall silhouette of the 3D letters. I'm also not a fan of the A and the R sharing the same bar either. I did that because of space issues. I am always hard on myself but I like constructive criticism so I always look for things I can improve next time.

I'm happy with this entry overall and glad I got to finish it on time. I only have a few hours now but I made the deadline. There will be a voting post soon. I will update a link to there in my post if you would like to take the time to vote for me. Thanks for reading. Hope to see YOU in the next contest.

WOW! Wonderful entry man!

You are the man, you managed to participate just before the end of the contest! Big UP! 🙏😎

I really like your work and it's the more Graffiti Looking entry I received this week and I'm pretty sure you are going to score big in this one (only 4 participants for this week so anyway all 4 will go home with prizes 🤩)

I see you did a 3D and I really like the lines pattern you applied on it, it's a style that I myself use at times, so nice one mate ahahah

No trouble man, found myself in that situation many times 😁 Now that you got some skills and my contest will be running every 2 weeks (roughly) it's definitely time to get that sketchbook bro! 💪

Don't bee too hard on yourself, it's you first entry and you did very well!
I'm sure from here on you'll just keep on improving :)

Good luck for the contest and Thanks for your participation! Highly appreciated! Respect! 😎

PS: I hope you don't mind a little boost from me 😜

Thanks for the boost. I hope we can get more entrys next contest. I've been wanting to show off some of my art on here so this was the perfect opportunity. Next time I'll chill a little and do something more basic like a throw up or something. I love the idea so I'd like it to gain some traction. It's pretty much what I do regardless of a contest or not. I just scribble random ass names when I get bored. I also don't show many people so it's kind of a hidden talent. Lol I'll see you around the #streetart community now that I know it's a thing.

Pleasure man! Your entry was really good, if I may, as you said that you like constructive criticism, I wanted to advise you to do the outlines of the whole lettering with the black marker like the one you used for the background and overlines, it's only because the black outlines are very thin and the lettering might not be that visible and you don't want that to happen because the whole piece looks very good and I'm sure with a thicker outline would be BANGING! ahahha

Respect and really happy to have a new graffiti mate ahahah Cheers! 😎

Yay! 🤗
