The city and seaport of Igoumenitsa is situated on the northwestern coast of Greece and is a kind of link between the mainland, the Ionian Islands and Italy. From Igoumenitsa, you can take a ferry to the islands of Zakynthos, Paxos and Corfu, as well as to the Italian cities of Brindisi, Bari, Ancona and even Venice.
That is how I got to Kerkyra, the capital of the island of Corfu, in September 2014, and this was my first experience of traveling by ferry. Of course, I took a few pictures and today I would like to share a small photo essay with you.

You can take a ferry to one of the two seaports of Corfu — Kerkyra or Lefkimmi. The ferry to Kerkyra takes about two hours. Lefkimmi is closer — the town is located in the southern part of the island — it can be reached in an hour. Because of this, ferry tickets to Lefkimmi are cheaper than to Kerkyra. However, all the main sights of Corfu are located in the north of the island, and the port of Lefkimmi is best chosen only if you have a car.
By the way, do not worry about ferry tickets. You do not need to buy them in advance. Ferries from Igoumenitsa to Corfu run almost every hour and there is always a place for you and your car on one of them. Even in high season.

Let's watch the lower deck of the ferry fifteen minutes before departure. After all passengers have their tickets checked and are allowed on the ferry, the first cars appear.
Ferry workers use gestures and screams to help each driver to park. Their task is to place vehicles on the deck in the most efficient way. Therefore, cars take up space at the sides of the deck very tightly to each other.
Finally, the remaining space on the deck is occupied by trucks. After that, the loading of vehicles ends and the ferry departs.
Inside the passenger deck, everything is very simple and even ascetic. There are many chairs and sofas. There is also a bar and TV. Despite this, sitting inside is quite boring, so many passengers spend this time in the open air. If the weather is good. 🙂
In September 2014, the weather was very sunny and warm, so I spent these two hours on the upper deck of the ferry, admiring the surrounding views.

In the picture below, you can see a long sandy spit with equipped beaches, cafes and camping is called Drepano. You can get there by car as well.
