Many of us are afraid of bees because of their painful stings. But... why are bees so important and curious?
Bees play a very important role in the pollination of plants, providing nutrient-laden food, which helps improve our diet, increase our food production and maintain biodiversity.
Below I show some of the curiosities that my father-in-law, who has been a beekeeper for more than 40 years, has explained to me.
- A bee visits 50 to 100 flowers during a collecting trip.
- Not all bees make honey.
- They are able to recognize human faces.
- One of the most extraordinary curiosities is that they can count.
- The life expectancy of a bee is approximately 45 days.
- Bees can self-medicating thanks to propolis, a mixture of wax and plant resins with antifungal properties.
- Panels are always shaped like a hexagon in order to make better use of all the useful space. This form is the one that better adapts to the anatomy of the bee.
- The queen bee can live up to 5 years and is the only bee that lays eggs. It can lay up to 3,000 eggs in one day.
- To produce one kilogram of honey, a bee would have to visit four million flowers and travel the equivalent distance around the world four times.
- A bee produces only 1/12th of a tablespoon of honey over its lifetime.
Life in a beehive is extremely curious, would you like me to explain it in detail in a new post? Don't miss it!
