Hi guys🤗🤗🤗 welcome back to Amzzy's lectures.
In my previous post,I tried to espouse all of us to the tips on how to analyse and Understand a poem.
The tips includes
Determining the speaker, the form and the setting of the poem
Understanding the subject matter
Determining what the poet is expressing
And finally understanding the impression; the mood, the emotion and the tune.
I have already explained the above mentioned tips in the previous post. So in this lecture,I wish to explain further using an example.
Below is one of my poems which I would get to analyse with you now.
Çaption.
Many atimes I wonder why the cemetery is the richest place in terms of intentions than never became inventions.
At that moment when the heart is pumping blood so fast and the owner is struggling on his death bed; as he lays there, with all his veins visible on his forehead and his hand clinging tightly to the bed sheet.
Poem.
It will become so obvious,
that he is struggling with someone,
that others cannot see ,
but the man struggling can hear.
All of a sudden
,he opens his eyes wide and yells,
please one more chance!!!please!!.
Then he heard the voice of a potential inside of him saying" ,
how on earth could you do this to me"? Did I not make myself lovely,
and enticing enough?
Tell me who must have given you so ,
much reward than I promised?
For I dwelled in your imaginations;
I lifted the curtain of your reality faintly ,to gaze into the world of fantasy ,
but my wings you broke;
my hands you tied backward ,
pilling unnecessary ENDEAVOURS at me .
Today you choose to untie me ,
my severed wings you restrained
but where shall I fly? To who? For what?.
I was made for you and you alone.
You simply cocked your gun
,you made me your target
, sometimes with fear,
sometimes with smile on your face
but you shot at me your bullet of procastination.
Let's get started.
In the above poem we would love to answer this questions.
who is the speaker in the poem?
where is the setting of the poem?
what is the form of the poem?
what is the subject matter?
what is the tittle?
what message is the poet trying to pass across?
what is the tone ,mood or emotion of the poetry?
The speaker in the poem is not directly the poet but the poet is using a personae. The personal which maybe assumed to be the thought within the mind is speaking through the poet as seen in stanza 2 line 1 "Then he heard the voice of a potential inside of him saying" ,
The setting of a poem can be in the present, past or future.reading through the poem, you would realise that the personae is speaking in the present as could be seen evidently in stanza 3 line 1 "For I dwelled in your imaginations; and also in stanza 4 line 1 "Today you choose to untie me". The setting is in the present and it is occurring in his imagination.
The form of the poem is " free verse because it lacks a regular pattern,no rhyme . Its form is its irregularity.
The subject matter of the poem simply means what is really happening in the poem. From the poem above, you would realise that someone is about dying and the potentials inside of him which he never developed due to procastination is querying him for asking for more time to make changes. This can been seen in stanza 2 line 3"
how on earth could you do this to me"? Did I not make myself lovely, and enticing enough? "
The poem above can be tittled " procastination"
From the poem ,you would realise that the poet is trying to stress the dangers in procastination as it is the thief of time. Hence it could mean that time and tide waits for no man and anything you wish to do ,do it NOW.
The tone depicts anger. The mood or emotion of the poet is cold perhaps unhappy. This can be evidenced in stanza 2"
Then he heard the voice of a potential inside of him saying" ,
how on earth could you do this to me"? Did I not make myself lovely,
and enticing enough?
Tell me who must have given you so ,
much reward than I promised?
