From the round huts of northern rural Nigeria, to the ones in the Southwest and the east, they all have one thing in common. They are eco-friendly without any carbon footprints. Our forefathers built their houses with earth. It is ancient and it has stood the test of time. Why did we abandon this uniquely African architecture? We did because we associate mud houses with rural poverty.
We will rather use cement, and cement does not provide acoustic and thermal insulation of mud as well as its humidity control. It is more expensive too. Mud houses can be made modern with bamboo and rattan accompaniments.

Young architects and venture capitalists in housing development can re-imagine this as the new modern African dwelling. The picture of the house above can be liken to the one I saw in Abrewapon Ghana. The owner told me it can withstand firing from an AK47 without a scratch. Perhaps we can change the nomenclature to earth house. We need to reset our carbon footprints to save this blue planet. The owner of the house called it "armor". He inherited it. It has been standing for six decades. "Africa Must Think!"
