With everything else that Steem is and can do, sometimes I forget it is a functional currency. Well last night I bought 10 pounds of bulk (recycled!) Lego from fellow Steem-ian and curb-recycling legend @steemmatt for the grand sum of 340 Steem. This is by far the largest purchase I have made directly with Steem (without exchanging into another currency).
This all started when I saw a post by awesome Steem-ian @brickmanbrad (who has an online Lego store that accepts Steem payment btw!!!) about how he had purchased Lego from @steemmatt with Steem, to be shipped all the way to Australia from the US! I thought to myself, shoot - I love Lego, I have some liquid Steem, and I am in the US so shipping should be easier. Bim bam boom and a few comment exchanges later, I was chatting with Matt on Discord to finalize a deal.
Why buy with STEEM?
I got a competitive price (there are some 10 pound lots for sale on eBay that are cheaper, but not with so many technic pieces which are more expensive) and didn't have to pay any exchange fees, nor does a cut of the sale go to eBay or Paypal or any other third party. Direct user to user sale on the Steem blockchain!
The more online sellers who accept Steem as a payment, and the more types of items that you can buy directly with Steem, the more utility the token has! Feeless transfers are nothing to sneeze at :)
I want to highlight @steemmatt's recent post putting some other items up for sale for Steem: https://steempeak.com/business/@steemmatt/experimenting-with-selling-recycled-inventory-on-the-steem-blockchain-a-grassroots-win-win-win-at-hand-with-your-help
I can say having just gone through the process of settling on a price and purchasing the items from Matt that he is very easy to work with and wants to make this a win-win. He will give you a competitive price and in all likelihood sell the item cheaper to you here for Steem than he would have sold it for fiat through other channels (or cheaper than you could have bought it for fiat through other channels). If there is something you need that wouldn't be prohibitively expensive to ship through the US, let Matt know and he may be able to find it for you! The guy is a magician at finding and reclaiming good usable stuff. Reuse and recycle - keep this stuff out of the landfill!
I will definitely make an unboxing post when the shipment arrives and I plan on making a freestyle Lego creation with the pieces, so stay tuned and Steem on!
Thanks for the endorsement!

W00t!
Awesome :)
I saw Matt's post but didn't see anything I fancied enough to pay airmail for.
Glad some business has been done!
yeah in all likelihood this will only make sense for users within the US. Although @brickmanbrad did spring for shipping to Australia!!!
If I'm 100% honest with myself, the purchase was as much the novelty of bringing a real world use case to Steem as it was the actual acquisition of the Lego. I possibly could have got something similar here in Australia a bit cheaper, but hey, who doesn't love getting international parcels right??
Yeah I kinda figured that was the case, particularly seeing as how you had to buy Steem with fiat to even do the purchase! LOL I have to agree with you though, it is really cool and fun to make the purchase with Steem. Hopefully some day this will be both of our own versions of the pizza bitcoin story :)

Oh cool. I saw his post about selling this but didn't realize I would catch the post about receiving it also. Legos are awesome. Cheers.
Always nice to see and hear some real world purchase being made with Steem. The future of this being a normal every day thing is going be wonderful.
Nice to see STEEM bring use for purchase!

Ha ha I know, right?!? Actually
the devil@steemmatt just tempted me with some more Lego and I am pretty sure I am about to buy more Lego with Steem :joy:Awesomesauce.. I bought a STEEM silver round with STEEM this year.. and hoodies..
That is cool - who was doing the hoodies? I keep meaning to get in on the STEEM silver rounds, that is definitely on my list.

hey awesome, I subscribed to the community and will definitely post there! Lego FTW
That is great, I am sure @galenkp will be thrilled to have you aboard :)
Yes, he is thrilled to have @carlnash on board. galenkp, I mean. That's me. In case you were wondering. Lol.
All aboard! One thing is for certain, @carlgnash is not bored with this conversation. He loves referring to himself in the third person. Or third alien as the case may be :joy:
Haha!
You know, I actually have a mate (more of an acquaintance I guess) who actually refers to himself in the third person all the time.
Me: Hey Rob, wanna go get a burger?
Rob: Robby loves burgers. Robby will go.
That sort of thing. He never used to. It started as a joke and then sort of spiralled out of control. He did it so much over the years he can't stop now. It's pretty funny. We used to take the piss, (make fun of him), but now it's just how he is and we accept it.
I should do a post about it I think.
Anyway, galenkp should go and do some work... Lol.
my five year old son won't stop referring to himself in the third person either :joy:
