The expression that people adopt when they feel pity for someone is an expression that is hard for them to replicate, if you ask them to. They usually flutter their eyelids, lower their head, and say ‘I don’t know what to say,’ ‘courage,’ ‘patience,’ or something like that.
I like to think that I discovered Yorgos Lanthimos because when I saw “Dogtooth” in 2015, I immediately googled him to find out his other movies, and after watching “Alps”, I sat back and waited for “The Lobster”, which was in post-production at the time.
Lanthimos didn’t let me down until “The Favourite”, which brought him ten Oscar nominations including best picture and best director. I mean it wasn’t a complete disappointment, of course; still, while watching it, I couldn’t help but think that something was missing.
Not something, but I’ve recently discovered that someone was missing: Efthymis Filippou.
A TALENT HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT
To state the obvious, I am not the one who discovered Yorgos Lanthimos, even within the boundaries of Turkey – I watched “Dogtooth” at the recommendation of a Turkish film critic, with Turkish subtitles! Not to mention he was already discovered by Colin Farrell!
And I doubt that most of you are familiar with the name Efthymis Filippou, but I didn’t discover him neither.
He is an Oscar-nominated writer for “The Lobster.”
He is also co-writer of Lanthimos’ other films from “Dogtooth” to “Alps” to “The Killing of a Sacred Deer”, except “The Favourite”.
How I came across his name last night is a whole other story though.
“SOME MEN WILL DO ANYTHING TO STAY SAD”
Last night I finally watched “Pity” on Mubi.
Directed by Babis Makridis, another Greek director considered one of the representatives of the Greek New Wave Cinema (or Greek “weird” wave) and co-written by Makridis and Efthymis Filippou, “Pity” is a dark comedy about a man whose wife is in coma since an accident. His pain is genuine, but it doesn’t take him long to find out that there are some upsides of living in grief. He thrives on everyone’s pity; in fact, at some point, he demands pity at all costs!
A NEW FORM OF NOVEL
The protagonist is not the man whose wife is in coma but his id, who craves for orange cakes, or to be more exact, who craves for to be pitied more! And the film simply investigating, and yeah, revealing human nature through the protagonist’s innermost desires.
While watching, I couldn’t help but think that it feels like a psychological novel written by moving images along with words.
Not like an adaptation; far from it – I mean, it is like a new form of novel, maybe a psychological novel that prefers shedding light on the protagonist’s thoughts and feelings and inner conflicts rather than depicting the goings-on in his life. A very funny psychological novel at times, I must add.
Who is the writer behind this novel-film then?
I found the name, Efthymis Filippou, and checked him out on IMDb.
You can imagine my surprise when I saw the Filippou’s filmography.
Now, am I allowed to think that I discovered him in a way – what do you think?

Yorgos Lanthimos’u bizzat keşfetmişim gibi düşünmek hoşuma gidiyor çünkü 2015’te “Köpekdişi”ni izlediğimde anında başka ne iş yapmış diye adamı gugıllamıştım. Aynı gün “Alpler”i de izledikten sonra da o sıralar post prodüksiyon aşamasında olan “The Lobster”ı beklemeye başladım.
“Sarayın Gözdesi”ne kadar Lanthimos beni hiç hayal kırıklığına uğratmadı. “Sarayın Gözdesi” de biliyorsunuz ona aralarında en iyi film ve en iyi yönetmenin de bulunduğu 10 Oscar adaylığı getirdi. Yani öyle büsbütün de hayal kırıklığı denemez sanırım. Yine de o filmi izlerken bana bir şey eksik gibi gelmişti.
Bir şey değil ama biri eksikmiş, yeni keşfettim: Efthymis Filippou.
GÖZ ÖNÜNDEKİ GİZLİ YETENEK
Malumu ilan etmek gibi olmasın ama eksik de bırakmayayım, tabii ki Yorgos Lanthimos’u Türkiye sınırları içinde dahi ilk ben keşfetmiş falan değilim. “Köpekdişi”ni bir Türk eleştirmenin önerisiyle izledim (aslında önce Ekşide gördüm,sonra eleştirisini okudum) üstelik de Türkçe altyazıyla. Bu arada “The Lobster”ın başrolündeki Colin Farrell da kendisini çoktan keşfetmişti.
Ve çoğunuz muhtemelen ismini ilk kez duyuyorsunuz ama Efthymis Filippou’yu da ben keşfetmedim.
Adamın “The Lobster” ile orijinal senaryoda Oscar adaylığı var.
Ayrıca “Köpekdişi”, “Alpler” ve “Kutsal Geyiğin Ölümü” gibi Lanthimos filmlerinin senaryosunda da Lanthimos ile birlikte imzası bulunuyor. Bir tek “Sarayın Gözdesi”nde yok.
Dün gece ismiyle nasıl karşılaştığım ise ayrı hikâye.
“BAZILARI ACI ÇEKMEK İÇİN HER ŞEYİ YAPAR”
Dün gece nihayet Mubi’de “Zavallı”yı izledim.
Yunan Yeni Dalga -veya bazı eleştirmenlerin tercih ettiği ismiyle Yunan Tuhaf Dalga- Sineması’nın bir diğer temsilcisi olarak kabul edilen Yunan yönetmen Babis Makridis’in yönettiği filmin senaryosunu bu kez Makridis ile birlikte yine Efthymis Filippou yazmış.
“Zavallı”, karısı bir kaza neticesinde komaya girmiş bir adamın kara komik hikâyesi diye tanımlanabilir sanırım. Adam gerçekten acı çekiyor, bence öyle en azından, fakat çok geçmeden bu acıların adamı olma halinin birtakım avantajları olduğunu fark ediyor. İnsanların ona duyduğu acıma hissinden keyif alıyor hatta bundan besleniyor ve bir noktada daha fazla acıma talep ediyor hem de her ne pahasına olursa olsun!
YENİ BİR TÜR ROMAN
Filmin başrolünde karısı komada bir adamdan ziyade bu adamın id’i var adeta. Canı portakallı kek çeken, daha doğrusu sürekli daha fazla acıma hissi aşeren bir id bu. Ve film de işte bu kahramanın en gizli arzuları üzerinden insan doğasını inceliyor hatta ortaya seriyor.
Filmi izlerken, kelimelerin yanı sıra görüntülerle yazılmış bir roman gibi olduğunu düşündüm bir şekilde.
Adaptasyon değil, hiç alakası yok – söylemeye çalıştığım, yeni bir tür roman gibi, mesela kahramanının hayatında olup bitenlere değil de kahramanın düşüncelerine, duygularına, iç çatışmalarına ışık tutan bir psikolojik roman gibi. Yer yer de bayağı komik bir psikolojik roman bu arada; söylemeden geçmeyeyim.
Peki bu roman-filmi kim yazmış dedim ve baktım ve sonra “Efthymis Filippou”ya bir de IMDb’de baktım. Filippou’nun filmografisini gördüğümde ne kadar şaşırdığımı hayal edersiniz.
Yine de onu bir şekilde ben keşfetmiş sayılır mıyım – ne dersiniz?

I am missing your reviews, but your Hypersensitivosaurus stories are also enormously enjoyable - your tales about your daily adventures always make me smile. In fact, I am doing intermittent fasting and I'm a bit hangry now! Pancakes would be a good choice to break the fast, but I can't take the risk of failure:))
