My name is Joshua Nuñez, some call me Gustavo, Fungi Melancholi, Jush, and Riddler Jr.; you may use any of these names to connect with me. I was born and raised in Marietta, Georgia and now live in Atlanta, Georgia at my sweet crib. I was raised largely by my father and my grandmother. When I was six years old my mother passed away due to melanoma and leukemia. It was not easy to raise me, nor my brother, but the life lessons that brought me up taught me a lot about existence, and where I should focus my momentum. I found very early on, much like my father and the majority of my family, that I loved art and music.

I spent hours upon hours as a child doodling, observing nature, and learning how to cook with whomever was watching over me at the time. I was a very quiet child for the most part, although I grew up to be more extroverted over time, a direct reflection of the work that I have done in increasing my confidence and motivation. As a teenager I began to focus my creative attention more on music. My father bought me a clarinet, a trombone, and a few guitars, while struggling to put food in our bellies. He felt obligated to gift me with instruments, because he knew that it would improve my quality of life; he didn’t buy me many toys or take us on fancy trips, but he always supported my artistic endeavors, as well as my brother’s. I slowly began to explore myself artistically as a teen; I joined the marching band for 5 years, performed in as many wind ensembles as I could, joined choir, musical theatre, and even formed two bands during my tenure at Marietta High School. By the time I was beginning to prepare to graduate, it was clear that music had to be my career of focus. I naively applied to Georgia State University, because I felt that if I spent more time in the city, that I would find more opportunities for myself. I was not wrong. GSU was an incubator for my skills as a jazz guitarist and classical composer, and is home to many world-class musicians and instructors. I studied with Nickitas Demos, Robert Scott Thompson, and Dave Frackenpohl, and it was there that my musical language began to take shape. I am now a freelance musician, a guitarist in the Atlanta, GA band Misty Eyed, and am collaborating with @shimozurdo on an art installation that will be presented in the lively city of Guadalajara, Mexico at the end of this year. My sound is a reflection of my taste and voice, and to describe my sound I must first mention my most notable influences: Gustav Mahler (clearly), Maurice Ravel, Morton Feldman, Iannis Xenakis, John Cage, Toru Takemitsu, System of a Down, Incubus, Deftones, Hiatus Kaiyote, Thundercat, Kendrick Lamar, Camaron de la Isla, Paco de Lucia, Vicente Amigo, Carmen Amaya, and the list is eternally developing. I love dense harmonies, playing with tension, and evoking sensation with my music. This is my artist statement of intent:

“I am a storyteller. In this modern age I choose to speak about things that concern me, using a medium that abstracts meanings, meaning, my music is a nourishing ground for contemplation and sensation; it resonates with the stories that lie within my listener’s ears, sometimes inspiring physical movement, and trance-like states. As I compose, I meditate, I explore myself through musical objects and concepts, while maintaining a ‘playful’ outlook on the musical process. My music is melancholic, hypnotic, dramatic, sometimes even pushing the human psyche to its limits. I invite you to experience my sound-world, and to converse with me; completion of my art relies on you.”

My main hobbies are cooking and experiencing the natural world. I take what I put into my body very seriously, that is why I buy the highest quality ingredients that I can afford, and I try to have a balanced diet; although pizza tends to break me. I spent many hours of my childhood watching food network, and learning from my father, who could create a five-course, five-star meal from the most random of ingredients, so I grew to love the art of cooking. I also love to spend time hiking, walking the beautiful trails in Georgia and camping. I am an avid rock-climber. My goal one day is to climb Meteora, in Greece. Check it out:

I want to thank the Hive community for welcoming me in. This is a short introduction of myself, but I hope that I cover the bases. I will be opening up to the community about my life more over time, and I hope to learn more about the people I will meet on here. For now, check out my Soundcloud page, this is where I upload recordings of my compositions. I also have two recordings of mine on Apple Music and Spotify. One is titled S.O.S by Misty Eyed, and the other is titled Illustration I. - glass by Kris Carlisle on the album The Silence Between.

Shout out to @shimozurdo for getting me on this platform! Let's make some art together!
