A small edible sea snail that has gills and cortical structure known as Periwinkle has been proven to have a lot of health benefits.
The African Periwinkle comes with a shell and this shell is used for a lot of things some of which are Ash for washing pots by grinding it into powdery form this undergoes a process of which I will love to outline in another post, It is also added in the construction of soak-away slabs and in road constructions in some rural areas. I will be sharing the Health benefits of periwinkle.
Most African homes and especially my state(Akwa Ibom) use periwinkle in several delicacies such as Afang Soup, okra soup, Edikang ikong soup, melon soup infact all the soup. Previously in my home we did not put it in White soup but now it comes in all the soup prepared because of the benefits we get as a result of eating it.
The periwinkle contains a lot of protein and it is low in fat.
It also contains high amount of selenium and magnesium. The selenium helps to fight diseases like cancer, cardiovascular or heart diseases. The presence of the magnesium helps to toughen the bones in the body, keep the heart in good condition and also helps in maintaining normal blood pressure.
The protein contained in periwinkle helps to prevent disease like Kwashoirkor which comes as a result of protein deficiency. The protein helps in cell regeneration, wound healing, and the regulation of enzymes in the body.
The Periwinkle contains vitamins that the body requires such as vitamin A (health of the eyes), Vitamin E ( acts as antioxidants in the body), vitamins B12. .
The periwinkle is also a iron and phosphorus. The iron here helps in the formation of the red blood cells in the body.
Do you know the periwinkle also contains choline?. The Choline in periwinkle helps the brain and nervous system to regulate memory, muscle control and mood.

Thank🙏you for reading. I hope it was helpful.
