I never bothered to look into it, but I was always told as a kid the reason pirates wore an eyepatch was to retain their nightvision for when they had to descend below to get items in the relative darkness of the boat interior.
Surely there is truth to this, because I can verify from experience the one-eye-closed technique does help to retain nightvision.
