On Mother's Day of All Days!
After 3 weeks of labour I finally have active sourdough starter! Yesterday I achieved the longed for 'doubling' after feeding. I literally jumped for joy. It passed the 'float test' as well. That's where you put a teaspoon of the starter in a cup of water and if it's truly ready to bake with, it will float.
I have named her Sharon. (Not to be confused with Karen 😂)
Well, it turns out I forgot how to make sourdough bread. My first loaf was great tasting but didn't have the airy inside, it was really dense. Now I'm on a new mission to remember how to make this shit 😂
It's so much fun though! Like I tell my children when they get frustrated with school, I'm constantly learning too. Every day. It never ends. You just gotta keep trying until you get it right.
Kiedis turned 10!
Candles in meringue was a tad tricky 😁
Squirrels!
I went for a walk on Friday night and had my own close encounter. I stopped to listen to a little creek, and looked over and a squirrel was just sitting there not caring at all that I was near him. He even let me snap a couple pics without running away 😍
More of the Walk
I believe this is where the 2 ticks I found on my pants when I got home came from. Even though the path is pretty clear, there is some longish grass where I stood to take those last pictures.
Pro Tip: Take photos of your shadow in the late day or early morning light.

GEESE!
I'll leave y'all with a couple pictures of some flowers we have in bloom...
I hope you enjoyed this collage of a post. It's been a great week, I'm super pumped about my yeasty success, and the coming of summer. I did a tonne of yard work today and hope to be sharing some #growfoodnotlawns progress with you soon! Take care and much love!! 😘 😘 😘
wooow, Lynds!! My congrats! I DO know that homemade yest is not easy to do as a rule, and it requires some skills and experience, so my applause - you've done it!!! Now your tasty bakery will be much better and healthier...mmmm...it looks tasty even when it's only starter!
congrats to your son!! He is so sweet!:) 10...mom, are you ready to be a mother-in-law?:))
squirrels..my god, it's my passion! (do you know my little secret? I'm called "a squirrel" by my husband:))) it's my home name;))) so now you know why I love these creatures so much, and I envy you because here it's not so easy to see them:( I even wanted to buy one as a pet, but I read a lot about their life at home and denied this idea...actually, my rabbit is not a good idea either cause she is ready to eat everything around her;))
I LOVE your little secret, that's soooooo sweet!! Mimimi!
I didn't know people could buy squirrels as pets there, that's interesting. We don't have that option here.
really? so only Russians are crazy:))
it's my favourite video, watched it 1000s times and always lol:)
I have never seen anything like it!
Wonderful photos :) I have tried to make bras and cookies a few times recently though usually it tastes like butt :(
I guess thats one thing that is now the yeast of your problems. That meringue looks worthy of smashing ones face into and not feeling an ounce of shame or guilt, yum!
Bwa hhahahhahaaa I love a good pun!! Thanks for the smiles!
Oooh congrats on the yeast, yeast mom! LOL Welcome to the world, Sharon!
Happy birthday, Kiedis! Oh my goodness he looks older than 10, even. Getting big!
I LOVE those photos! Those woods are just fantastic. I'm so jealous. <3
Good to know it's not just city squirrels that give no fucks. One day I was coming down the back stairs and there was a squirrel sitting on the wall ...staring. Like he wanted to throw down. I was like ...dude, I'm just walking by, it's ok... XD
😂 😂 😂
I'm tellin' you, he was giving me The Stare. Like, "You want some of this, bitch??!" Jesse Pinkman attitude and all. XD
Bwa hahahaa "I made you my bitch.....bitch." - Pinkman Hulk Squirrel
To be fair, squirrels in Denver carry the plague. Not covid - the literal black plague. So I gave his tweaker ass a wide berth. LMAO
Whaaaaaaa? That's terrifying!!
Yeah it was all in the news several years back because they were dropping dead out of trees and people's dogs were trying to eat the dead, infected squirrels. The prairie dogs have it too but they're more in the 'burbs than the city proper.

Wow lovely area @lynds. You got some great shots. Love the squirrel. I HATE ticks. I swear when I was little we never worried about them. Now I cant seem to get away from them... Ah yes plenty of honkers everywhere. If we could just get them to eat the ticks!
Where I grew up (West Coast) there were no ticks, it's my first time experiencing them since we moved out to the East Coast 5 years ago. This year seems to be particularly nasty. Ughhhhhh...yes, we need to teach the geese to eat them for realz!
Healthy food and great pictures ... :-)
Thanks for visiting us Mike, next time I promise there will be kittehs 😘
Scary Mary getting some sun on her belly..
Ahhhhh...that's the life!
Wow Lynds you've really outdone yourself with this post 😁
Your pics are superb, I especially like the ones of the trees. It captures a mood. And your baking holy hell that's some great food porn there 😂. Congrats on the yeast.
BTW tell Kiedis Happy Birthday! He's looking all handsome and growed up!
I'm glad you liked the #foodporn Michael haha, I live to please!
I will most definitely pass on your Happy Birthday to Kiedis 😘 Thanks as always for visiting us!
Oh, man
Happy birthday to your 'ten' year old; he looks healthy and happy from momma's cooking and baking :>) I'm sure.…!!! Those lemon meringue pies look so good @lynds . I want some now...
Regards.
Thank you very much @angryman, and also for the sourdough starter tips, they helped me get to the finish line!!
You are very welcome and I'm happy your experiment was a success. I'm still craving lemon meringue pie after seeing those pictures you posted. My mother used to make them for us as children many years ago. The only problem was I'd be able to eat a mere single sliver, because our family was so large :>(
Ahhhh scarcity always makes things taste better...
