Creating a better default

in OCD5 years ago

I have been asked a few times over the last few days how I have managed to keep up with my writing and have no real strategy other than working on it. Just because I enjoy the process of doing it all doesn’t mean it’s a hobby, something I want to choose, something I don’t have. It makes it even easier as I feel like I’ve been forced to write somehow. I probably won’t do that because I don’t respond well to authority with the feeling of trying to walk my path with me.

Consistency is not about forcing the situation, not trying to drive the unpleasant “through”. This does not mean, however, that it is a bed of rose petals, there must be room for discomfort. At least led to a continuum of unconsciousness. I don’t have to worry about making it every day. I just do it, it’s not a job or labor, it’s a part of my process - a habit.

There are different types of habits, but once they are created, they are the same. They are all natural, automatic, comfortable. Feels even worse. For those of us who are smokers or who were (I) I am sure there is no one with the first puff of cigarette who said, "Yes, that's what I lost my life". The first sip of coffee, the first alcohol ... there are exceptions, such as sugar and caffeine are some drinks that "unknowingly" create intoxication. But for many bad habits, there is a process of overcoming the unpleasantness of the experience to become accustomed to it so that it feels good.

The same is true of good habits. But often we don’t see good habits as bad as the reward doesn’t satisfy us in the short term. Even if the long view is even better. Eating salad does not change our body, we need to do it consistently. Often, the rewards of bad habits are not even directly related to us, be it social in any way, was it your first cigarette or a solitary drink, did you feel rebellious, brave, social pressure or group harmony?

Habits are hard to break once formed. But starting the journey towards the better is quite easy, it takes some attention and purpose. It is very difficult to leave something like cold turkey. Which a person finds mandatory and is very difficult to work with until one has run and “practiced” everything in a difficult or uncomfortable process. Probably the best way is to take steps to improve the child and this also means that there are more chances of a small win soon to encourage continuity.

The biggest hurdle in building a habit is feelings when it is a good time to do it. Then fix it, such as in the early stages and why you may not like the results as much. A new or difficult process is going to look bad. Rather set aside time for it and commit to some level of activity, no matter what the feelings say. It may not be the most productive, it may not be for the most part which makes a lot of difference. But it's something and then, schedule the ramp-up process as well, set a time limit from 5 minutes of activity to 20 minutes, to ten minutes in an hour.

It doesn't matter what the goal activity or outcome is. If you consistently do something that you value or support that you value as support. The process of continuous improvement is the fastest way to get there and the process will improve even faster once the mix comes into play in the region.

The key-stone habit is to put pressure on other habits in the nasal passages. For example, regular exercise usually leads to better eating. As a result, other personal aspects, greater self-confidence, social skills or a number of other things can be taken care of. All of these exercises feed towards each other to improve at a much higher level than being done alone.

For me, writing has become one of my core keystone habits. Because it makes me want to be more attentive to my surroundings, to explore what I might otherwise discover. Processing my thoughts, attracting perspectives and gathering feedback that adds perspectives and context. As well as the people who introduce me and the ideas I may not have seen or considered before. My writing encourages me to write more and allows an endless supply of thoughts to be generated and processed as a result of being attentive. But I have to be careful about the response, I have to read the environment, the answers and the changes in temperature and then spend time considering them individually and in combination.

It works for me and I enjoy spending my time (investing) in these things. Which is why it’s a hobby and because I’ve deliberately worked towards improvement. Most of it is habitual. The habit means I don't have to think about giving time, I don't have to think about how I feel about writing. I don't have to think about a lot of requirements to stay consistent. My energy can be used to explore the world and build on my experience. If you want to stay in something or get better. However, if the process with "success" (achievement) supports the set result, then you need to set the conditions for success.

Many people want specific results but do not work consistently in their process. They google "how to make money" but it doesn't develop the habits involved. What the outcome will be is not a very considerable consideration. The process gets us there and if we consistently do something that takes us away from where we want to go, we are less likely to get anywhere other than where we are headed.

For those who want to improve a process, spend some time and hold on to it regardless of the feeling. Make it easy for yourself and remove the scatterings. Trigger your desired behavior with some kind of alarm, something that obviously cannot be ignored. Change your environment Find a place where you don't usually have bad habits. If you usually sit on the sofa and watch Netflix, don't make the place you wrote. Find a new angle and make sure there are rewards for your activity, that spending your time on it gives you something. Even the smallest thing - don’t just make the prize the thing you want to avoid.

And of course, have some fun.
