Everyone feels a certain way about risk. Some are risk-oriented, others are risk-averse. Talking about risks seems to generate some good conversation.
I would like to make this subject as an interactive one so as we can all learn from each other.
What is your definition of Risk?
Risk is a situation involving exposure to danger. It’s simply the possibility of something bad happening in taking an advance step.
Are you a Risk taker?
Yes, I’m a risk taker. My reasons are;
I love doing something which could be possible rather than doing something which is sure.
I love accepting challenges. Even if I lose, I know I will have a lot to learn from. And if I win, That would be a plus for me and also an achievement.
I love taking risks as it keeps motivating me and making me wiser.
I know chances of loosing are on high side while taking risks but life is all about Risk.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of taking risks?
As we all know that taking risk requires courage. you have to be so much patient and calm during the process of taking it.
Advantages:-
- Taking Calculated risks builds better self confidence.
- You get some experience. You will learn a lesson in life by the outcome of the risk.
- It makes you brave and you learn to accept the challenges in life. Because “ What does not kill you, makes you stronger”.
Disadvantages:-
- At the end of it all, peradventure you suffer emotionally, financially, you might be rejected by some of your friends and family.
- Lose respect, self confidence.
- Gain fear
- You have to go back n start from starting point.
What risks have you taken in your life?
I finished my National Diploma (ND) as an Industrial Maintenance Engineer (IME) 2years back at Yaba college of Technology. I had an Industrial Training(IT) for 1year and decided to finish my education. The following year, I applied for my Higher National Diploma (HND) with the same course as an Industrial Maintenance Engineer but my name was not shortlisted even as it was a small class size of 30. So i stayed home that year to imagine what must have been wrong to make my name not shortlisted, also i thought about the situation in my country that a job opportunity might not be easy for me with that course because it was a new course which most companies don’t have an idea about. Another year came, i had to risk it by changing my course and applying as a Mechanical Engineer with a class size of 150 which many people condemned me of that act and said all sort of things that my admission can never be possible for the fact that I wasn’t admitted even with my original course and a smaller class size to a different one with a bigger class size. With so many discouragements from people about the change of course i made brought fear into me which made me frightened about losing the second year.
The first second and third list came out and still yet my name wasn’t shortlisted, i made it in mind that i lost another year already to my surprise a friend gave me a phone call and said ‘your name is out on the list’. I couldn’t believe that at first till i checked and saw my name and said VICTORY ATLAST! I never knew when tears dropped out of my eyes wide open.
All I can say is, and what I'll say is that in life, any situation we might find ourselves we should all listen to what the heart says. Following the heart may make you a bad person maybe for a few days, but in the long run, life will be easy and fulfilling if the hearts words are heeded to.
