Vila do Conde is a beautiful city in the North of Portugal, seat of the municipality, located on the bank of the River Ave, very close to the sea, and an important industrial center, fishing port and, increasingly, tourist center.
In 1626 the abbess of the Monastery of Santa Clara, D. Maria de Meneses, started the construction of the Aqueduct that would transport the waters from a spring in Terroso to the Monastery.
The aqueduct was initially formed by a set of 999 round arches about six kilometers long. It is one of the main works of civil architecture of the modern age in northern Portugal.
Vila do Conde has always had a strong connection with the sea, which became even worse with the construction of the shipyard at the time of the Discoveries. The Heritage of this peaceful city is of unique importance and beauty.
The region's beaches are also of great beauty, attracting many visitors in the summer.
