Whoever comes to Porto for the first time doesn't need to know the names, just put on some comfortable shoes or get on the bike and get in the way, starting at the tip that suits you: Foz or Valbom.
This is undoubtedly the most peaceful part of the tour, the one that reveals some of the bucolism that the Douro will have above. We just can't choose one of those warm weekends, during which the yearning for nature and the outdoors conquers the Portuguese, who take to walking and cycling in any natural space, seaside or riverside, in familiar heaps.
The banks are green, the houses are spaced and enviable, set in small woods or backyards. The river here is tame and smooth, always opaque but only disturbed by the occasional cruise boats that go up to Régua, or by the hard aficionados of the art of rowing.
The Cruzeiro das Cinco Pontes ends here, and a more arid section for walkers begins, but still suitable for lovers of engineering and architecture as we pass under four bridges Freixo, S. João, D. Maria and Infante.
