Stateless sounds like "refugees", stateless/ethnic people. Like No Land's Men. Although in the series its a metaphor. The Australians have done well on Netflix with this show. After Unorthodox, we now have this.
Australian shows, movies, are preety much like Hollywood, melodrama, violence, sex, nothing exaggerated. Goes on a strange ride. So the 1st episode of Stateless did not hook at all. Rather, the storylines seem out of place. The real nature of the show was not easily catchable.
I somehow finished the 2nd episode with a minimum of interest to watch only because of Yvonne Strahovski. Miss Waterford of The Handmaid's Tale is similarly beautiful in this show.
I was very much looking forward to seeing some solo of this Australian beauty. Got it! Having got the main character here, he has poured everything into acting. Waterford fans will love Yovan in this great emotional character.
Stateless tells the story of 4 people - an Afghan emir trying to come to Australia with his family, a soft-spoken father/husband who accepted a well-paying job which is beyond his nature, a government bureaucrat getting into trouble while managing immigration detention center. And last but not least, Ivan Strawski, a young woman who eloped to chase her dreams.
The center of 4 of them is an Australian Immigration Detention Center. Much like a refugee or a prison. Refugees from different countries are waiting for Australian protection visas. Year after year passes. Without the slightest awareness, they will be deported to their own country, which is fatal for them. However, the purpose of the show did not seem to tell the story of the refugees. The underlying political aspect is presented in a very neutral way, so it never felt like giving a speech. Many want to see that again. The human story of the residents that I saw in that movie of the prison, asylum type. - No, you won't find it here. The story is limited to the struggles of those 4 characters.
There is no attempt to cry emotionally. So much more practical. The screenplay is excellent, the dynamics of the plot never understood before. The direction of the shooter can be felt at the end of the 3rd episode. Then the 4th and 5th episodes are the best time to shoot. It seemed worthwhile to give so much time.
There is no chance of romance in the stateless, there is no violence, there is nothing uncomfortable, there is no nudity except showing Yovan in a bikini. Towards the end of the 5th episode there is light sex, like avoidance.
It is based on the true story of Australia's immigration centers. Excellent in terms of cinematography. The acting was 10 on 10. Yovan's mental journey was very disturbing. However, the storyline of the female director and the guard with the blue collar job is the best in the second part. The dilemma of a career has been shown very nicely.
Even though it has only 6 episodes, as I said, I can't be sure what the show will feel like while watching the first few episodes. So after watching half, you will get involved in the main 4 characters in such a way, and you will not be able to get up without seeing in the end.
