I guess as far as the broader community goes it shows where the majority of people's interests are and/or how much they're willing to put down for it (though I'm pretty sure the people on the "losing" side whichever that happens to be will always cry foul).
Think carrying on as normal is in itself a way of showing support for steem because we're still here when we could have powered down and bailed the hell out when everything was being insane.
