Until last year we had a few goldfish in a small fish tank. I did a mistake probably while changing water. All 5 fish died within a few hours near the filter. I couldn't gather the courage to bring more.

Yeah I totaly get that, had my bigest lost a few months ago, more than 10 fish died, and a ton of shrimps. But I recaped, and certenly learned from it. Some updates soon 🍀
I have a 30 liter set up as well. First with guppys, a easy beginer fish, now with shrimps only.
From experiance, a smaler tank is harder to mantain. It reacts faster to changes and has less room for errors.
I shure hope maybe you will have some motivation to get started again hahah goldfish are amazing!

I guess I poured a few extra drops of chlorine that day :(
Oh no, yeah that is something to realy watch out. Holdfish are quiet the fighters, but abainst chlorine they have no chance.
I am luckey enough that there is good tapwater here.
While filling up the tank during water changes I use a elexier that makes tapwater safe for fish, namly making shure there is no chlorine in there. I bought that at the local pet store about a year ago and use it ever since.

We have some of the best available tap water in Australia but probably we used a bit of extra chlorine that day and that spoiled everything.

There are easy test stripes to test for chlorine.
