As is often the case with me, im extremely late to the party!! This story im about to tell you happened way, way, way back between the summer of '21 and the spring of '22, but having only now just come across the report, i thought id share with you this interesting metal detecting story....
Whilst Wales is full of history, castles and kings, myths and legends, because of its location and anti-english passion, much of its past remains left unwritten and wild!! A significant find of historical significance, could shed some light on its history, never before known.

In a remarkable discovery by metal detectorists in Wales, a trove of gold coins dating back over 2,000 years has recently come to light, marking the first-ever find of Iron Age gold coins in the country. Unearthed on the Welsh island of Anglesey, off the northwest coast, these 15, now declared treasure, staters are believed to have belonged to the Corieltavi tribe, occupants of the region now known as England’s East Midlands between 60 BC and 20 BC.
The three metal detectorists responsible for this extraordinary find, spanning from July 2021 to March 2022, are Lloyd Roberts, Peter Cockton, and Tim Watson. Lloyd Roberts, with over 14 years of metal detecting experience, discovered the initial coin, a gold stater, expressing his excitement and surprise at finding another shortly after. Peter Cockton followed with the discovery of the next three coins, leading the trio to contact the Portable Antiquities Scheme, an organization documenting historical and archaeological finds.
A stater found in the hoard
Tim Watson, a novice in metal detecting inspired by his father during lockdown, found the sixth coin and subsequently upgraded his equipment due to his newfound enthusiasm. Over the ensuing weeks, Watson uncovered the remaining nine coins, each showcasing an elaborate design reminiscent of those minted during the rule of Philip II in ancient Macedonia (359 BC to 336 BC). The coins display mythological deity Apollo’s wreath and hair on one side, with a triangular-headed horse surrounded by symbols on the reverse.
The hoard of discovered Staters
These staters, believed to have been crafted between 60 BC and 20 BC, were likely not used for routine transactions, but rather served as gifts exchanged among the elites to forge alliances or demonstrate loyalty. Alternatively, there's speculation that the Corieltavi tribe may have employed them in transactions involving copper, abundant in various parts of the island. Another intriguing possibility is that the coins were utilised as offerings to fulfill religious vows, given the region's significance as a religious center during that period.
Gwynedd Archaeological Trust explored the site in September 2021, hoping to uncover clues about why the coins were buried there. Sean Derby, Historic Environment Record archaeologist at Gwynedd Archaeological Trust, commended the discovery, stating that it enhances our understanding of the prehistoric and early Roman activities in the region.
The Welsh museum Oriel Môn is actively pursuing the acquisition of these historic coins with plans to exhibit them publicly, providing an opportunity for enthusiasts and the general public to marvel at this incredible glimpse into Wales' rich archaeological past.

Worth looking at the Gold Cape that's an impressive find from North Wales too.
Nice read! Maybe you descend from that Corieltavi coin loving tribe; . (PS check your mailbox in a week from now!)
I never did fine that Lost Treasure I was hoping to fine... As time flew by, I was able to create my own Treasure... The Treasure I created, turned out to be much bigger than anything I ever imagined finding... And then I realized there was another Treasure, everyone was over looking... Who would have thought Common U.S. Coinage would turn out to be the over looked hard asset...???
