Frozen: Response to -0℃ Temperatures and Memories of Swimming Club
Many things are frozen here, but it’s beautiful. I see ice all around my house, and it amazes me how captivating ice can be.
How long does it take for ice to form? If the fridge is cold enough, it typically takes around 120 minutes per cycle. That’s fascinating. I realized I’ve never actually witnessed the exact moment water turns into ice. When I mentioned this to my husband, he laughed and said that I would need a special video camera to capture nature's wonders.
On my property, there’s a drain pipe under the land. Water constantly drips from the pipe beneath the house. It’s incredible how it freezes into a structure that looks like an ice version of Casper.
This Casper-like ice pillar has such interesting energy. Every time I see it, I feel like someone is standing there. I’ve always wished I could witness the exact moment it first freezes, but I can’t.
When I researched ice formation, I learned that water contains small amounts of dissolved air. When it freezes, it does so from the outside inward, pushing the air inward. The trapped air bubbles make the ice appear white. That makes sense because the ice pillar looks white inside, with blue parts surrounded by a frosty core. It really looks like a crystal. I hope this Casper will survive as long as possible.
There are other beautiful ice formations nearby. They look like power stones, with layers building up to the top. Fluffy snow rests on top of the ice chunks, while the delicate bottom part sparkles like a chandelier.
In my hometown, people needed to shut off the water in winter when temperatures dropped below zero at night. In modern buildings, this isn’t always necessary, but it’s still a must if you’re away for a while or when temperatures drop extremely low.
Growing up, my house wasn’t that old, so we didn’t have to stop the water often. But at my workplace and in some apartments I rented, it was essential to drain the pipes to prevent freezing. People even had to prepare toilet water after draining everything.
If you forget to stop the water, it can cause big trouble. One of my ex-coworkers had a serious issue when the pipes burst at a cold apartment workspace because someone forgot to shut off the water. Luckily, she only had to clean up the mess, but in some cases, people face costly repairs or penalties. Winter really makes you careful about water.
One reason rivers don’t freeze is their fast flow. The constant movement prevents surface ice from forming. The depth of the river also plays a role. I noticed that although a nearby lake has frozen, a small river hasn’t. It’s an important water source for locals, and I often come here to collect fresh spring water. I hope it never freezes.
Even in the cold winter, the spring water tastes amazing. It is so refreshing. Surprisingly, drinking the cold water doesn’t make me feel colder, even when it’s -12℃ outside. In fact, the water feels warmer than the air.
This reminds me of the mist saunas in Japan. I don’t feel comfortable in hot, dry saunas, but I love mist saunas. Afterward, I used to jump into cold water. That shock of cold always brought back memories of my time in the swimming club.
I was a pretty good swimmer when I was young. I belonged to the top course in my club, which meant our coaches were chill. They would give us a daily schedule for the first 30 minutes, and we’d practice individually.
I especially loved jumping into the pool during the cold winter. It was a bit troublesome to make it to the club in the freezing weather, but I caught the shuttle bus near my house for the 4 pm lesson. By then, it was already dark and chilly outside.
As soon as I arrived at the swimming pool, I felt calm and happy to start swimming. The club doesn’t exist anymore, but I still miss those twice-weekly lessons. They were some of my happiest moments.

凍りつく：氷点下の対応とスイミングクラブの思い出
あらゆるものが凍りついていますが、とてもきれいです。家の周りで凍りついたものをたくさん見かけますが、氷の魅力に気づかされます。
氷ができるまではいったいどのくらいの時間がかかるのでしょう。冷蔵庫がきちんと冷えていれば、およそ１２０分で完全に水が氷になるそうです。おもしろいですね。わたしはこれまでに一度も水が氷になるその瞬間を目撃したことはありません。それを主人に言うと、自然界を撮る特殊なビデオやカメラがなければそんな瞬間見ることなんかできないよと、笑いながら言われました。
家の敷地には地面の下の水を流すパイプが通っています。そのパイプから少しずつ地下水が流れ落ちていきます。その滴り落ちた水が、こんなに大きな氷の塊になるまで凍りつくなんてすごいです。まるで、キャスパーの氷バージョンのようです。
この氷キャスパーは、すごく不思議なエネルギーを発しています。その前を通るたびに誰かがそこに立っているような感じがするのです。氷になっていく瞬間が見たいものですが、無謀なことです。
水にはほんの少しの空気がとけているらしいです。 冷凍庫で水を凍らせると、外側から内側に向かって水が凍っていき、外側の水に含まれていた空気は内側に向かって押し込まれていくのだそうです。 この内側に集まった空気の泡が、氷を白くしている正体らしいです。なるほど。この氷の柱も中が白くなっていて、青色が包み込んでいるように見えます。まるでクリスタルのようです。氷キャスパーが長生きしてくれますように。
これも近所で見つけた美しい氷です。パワーストーンのように見えます。いくつもの層が重なって氷の塊になり、一番上にはサラサラの雪が積もっています。下のデリケートな氷の部分がシャンデリアのように見えます。
わたしの故郷では、冬の寒い日に氷点下になると、夜間に水落としをしなければなりません。新しい建物ではそこまで水落としを気にする必要がありませんが、しばらく留守にする時やかなり気温が低い日などは水落としの必要があります。
わたしの実家はそこまで古くなかったので水落としをしょっ中する必要はありませんでした。ところが、職場のビルや賃貸していたアパートなどの場合は、水落としが必須でした。同時に、水落としをした後のトイレもきちんと凍りつかないように処理しておく必要があります。
もし万が一、水落としをし忘れてしまうと大事になります。昔の同僚が大変な目にあったことがありました。他の同僚が水落としを忘れて帰宅したため、その同僚が水を使おうとした時に水が溢れ出しました。幸い、大掃除のみで事なきを得たようですが、もしも被害が大きければ補償問題などに発展してしまいます。冬は気をつけなければならないことがありますね。
川が凍らない理由の一つに、川の流れの速さが関係するようです。 水が流れることで、表面の水が冷えたとしても常に新しい水が入れ替わり氷ができにくいのだそうです。 特に、川の流れが速いほど、結氷する可能性が低くなるらしいです。 それには川の深さも関係してくるとのこと。
どおりで近所の大きな湖は凍るのに、小さな川の水は凍らないのですね。この川の水は地元の人にとって大切な水源です。よく新鮮な湧き水を汲みにきます。この水は凍りませんように。
寒い冬の日であっても、ここの湧き水は気持ちが良くてリフレッシュできます。驚くことに、今日のようにマイナス１２℃を超えると、冷たい水が冷たすぎないのです。事実、空気よりも水のほうが暖かく感じます。
水を見ていると、日本でよく入っていたミストサウナのことを思い出します。わたしは暑すぎるサウナが苦手ですが、ミストサウナが好きです。サウナに入った後は冷水に飛び込みます。そして、水の冷たさを感じると、昔通っていたスイミングクラブを思い出します。
その頃は、けっこう泳ぎが得意でした。クラブではトップコースに所属していたので、コーチたちもリラックスしている人が多かったです。初めの３０分ほどは、渡されたスケジュールを各自トレーニング項目をこなす自由な時間がもらえます。
特に冬の寒い日に、そのプールに飛び込むのが好きでした。シャトルバスが家の近所まで迎えにきてくれたので、それに乗ってクラブに向かいました。でも、寒い日はプールに行くまでは面倒くさかったです。冬の夕方４時頃になると、すでに外は真っ暗で寒かったので面倒臭さを感じるのです。
ところが、プールに着くと、すぐに心地よさを感じて泳ぎ始めました。そのクラブはもうありませんが、週に２回泳いでいた頃が懐かしく、いい思い出です。

It's a winter wonderland where you live! It's hard to imagine temperatures that cold 🥶. Where I live, it usually freezes only a couple times during winter. Instead of shutting off the water, the practice is to let every faucet drip slightly to prevent freezing.
