What a Pretty Bird 'Canada Goose'
When I went for a walk with my husband and dog the other day, we witnessed a beautiful moment with two Canada Geese. During winter, we usually walk in the forest, but now that the snow has finally melted (hopefully no more snow), we decided to enjoy the warmer season. Unfortunately, ticks have already started appearing in the grass.
My dog has already taken his first tick-prevention pill this spring, but I still see ticks everywhere. I have to be careful not to go too deep into nature with him from now on. Luckily, his white fur makes it easy to spot any ticks on him.
To avoid the tick-heavy areas, we decided to take a walking trail next to the river near our house instead.
Recently, we've been hearing ducks returning to the area. I love their quack-quack voices. The moment they land on the river, it truly feels like spring has arrived.
Wait a minute! Soon after hearing the ducks, I heard a loud, deep sound, nothing like a duck's quack. It almost sounded like a human laughing out loud. As soon as we turned our heads, two large birds flew right past us, at eye level!
I wanted to take a photo of that moment, but it all happened too suddenly, too quickly, and too beautifully. I was captivated by their flight. Their size was almost the same as Japanese cranes. Yes, they were pretty big.
They were Canada Geese.
The Canada Goose is a large, migratory bird native to North America. It is easily recognizable by its black head and neck, white chinstrap, brown body, and loud honking calls. As you can see in the photo, they have striking white markings on their faces.
These geese are highly adaptable and are often found near lakes, rivers, and urban parks. They migrate in V-shaped formations and are known for their strong family bonds. While they are admired for their resilience and beauty, they can also be aggressive when protecting their nests.
Luckily, they weren’t aggressive that day. My husband reminded me that we should be careful of their strength. As a bird lover, I’ve never had any major trouble with birds, but since it was my first time seeing them up close, I made sure to be cautious.
They landed on the river with such grace, almost like they were dancing. My dog seemed a little surprised at first, but he was immediately fascinated by them.
He gently followed them, watching them with curiosity. Just minutes before seeing the geese, he had met a new dog friend, so he was feeling calm and relaxed.
After spending some time on the water, seemingly eating, the geese flew away. It was such a precious moment to see Canada Geese so closely for the first time in my life.
The Canada Goose as a totem animal symbolizes loyalty, perseverance, teamwork, and navigation. It represents strong family bonds, as geese mate for life and travel in cooperative flocks.
As I mentioned earlier, their size, appearance, and energy reminded me of Japanese cranes. They carried an air of loyalty and something almost sacred.
Spiritually, the Canada Goose encourages determination, guidance, and community support, reminding us to stay committed to our life path and trust our inner compass. Their seasonal migrations symbolize transition, adaptability, and the cycles of life, urging people to embrace change with confidence.
I don't think I’ll have many chances to see them that close again, so I will treasure this memory. They were too beautiful to forget.

「カナダグース」はなんてきれいな鳥なんだろう
先日、主人と犬の散歩に出かけたとき、とっても美しいカナダグース（カナダガン）を見かけました。冬は森に散歩に出かけることが多いのですが、ここ最近かなり雪がとけました（このままそうであってほしい）。雪解けの時期を楽しみたいです。残念ながら、もう草むらに潜むマダニの姿を見かけました。
今年の犬のマダニ用の薬はもうすでに飲ませ始めました。いたるところにマダニの姿を見かけるので、森の中に出かけるのは避けたほうがよさそうです。幸い、犬の毛は白いのでマダニ発見を素早くできるという利点があります。
草が生い茂るような場所を避けるため、河岸の散歩コースに出かけることにしました。
最近、アヒルの姿を見かけました。クワックワッとなく姿はかわいらしいです。彼らが川に降り立つ姿を見ると、春を感じます。
ちょっと待って！なんでしょう、この賑やかな鳴き声は…。アヒルの鳴き声とは違って人間が大笑いしているしているような声がきこえてきました。声がする方に顔を向けると、２羽の大きな鳥がスーッとやってきて、私の目の高さをしばらくの間平行するように飛んでいました。
その瞬間を写真に撮りたかったのですが、突然のことでしたし、かなり素早く、綺麗すぎて見惚れてしまい無理でした。日本の丹頂鶴くらいの大きさで、かなり大きめのサイズでした。
カナダグースです。
体が大きなカナダグースは、北アメリカの渡り鳥です。頭と首が黒くて、体が茶色、白のあごひもをつけているような見た目で、大声で鳴き、割と簡単に見分けがつく鳥です。
どんな環境にも素早く馴染み、湖、川や都市の公園内などで見かけられます。V字型の編隊を組んで移動し、強い家族の絆がある鳥として有名です。回復力の高さとその美しさで人々を魅了しますが、巣を守るときは攻撃的になるそうです。
幸い、この日の彼らはとても穏やかでした。主人が、彼らの攻撃性について教えてくれました。鳥好きとしては鳥の攻撃を今まで受けたことがないのですが、初めて見かける鳥なので、間近で見るときは十分気をつけながら観察しました。
彼らは艶やかにスーッと川の上に舞い降りました。その姿はまるで踊りをしているかのようでした。私の犬は、はじめは少し驚いた様子でしたが、すぐに嬉しそうにしていました。
カナグースを見かける少し前に、新しい友達犬に出会ったばかりだったので、カナダグースを見かけても落ち着いて興味を持ち、静かに追いかけていました。
カナダグースは、川でしばらく過ごしてご馳走を食べたあと、また飛び立っていきました。カナダグースをこんなに間近で見たのは初めてだったので、とても貴重な経験でした。
カナダグースのトーテムアニマルは、忠誠心、忍耐力、チームワークとナビゲーションを象徴しているそうです。つがいは生涯を共にし、協力的な群れで旅をすることから家族の強い絆を表しているのだそうです。
上にも書きましたが、カナダグースのサイズや見た目、そして持っているエネルギーは日本の丹頂鶴を思い出させてくれます。高貴で神聖なイメージがする鳥です。
カナグースのスピリチュアル的な意味は、決意、導き、コミュニティーのサポートを奨励し、自分の人生の道に全力で取り組み続けること、そして自分のうちなる羅針盤を取り戻すことを思い出させてくれるとのことです。彼らの季節の移動は移行、適応性、人生のサイクルを象徴していて、自信を持って変化を受け入れるように我々に促してくれています。
こんなに間近でカナダグースを見ることができる機会はそんなに多くなはいと思うので、宝物の思い出としてとっておきたいと思います。綺麗すぎて簡単には忘れられないとは思いますが…。
