"Basak plant": Elevate your wellbeing with herbs!

India is considered rich in plant medicine due to its vast biodiversity, which includes a large variety of medicinal plants across different geographical regions, coupled with a long history of traditional medical systems like Ayurveda, Unani, and Siddha that have extensively documented the use of these plants for healing purposes, making it a treasure trove of knowledge and natural remedies. Basil plant, lemongrass which are very common in many households. Still there are many plants which many people are not aware of. Like in the case of Basaka plant.

The plant and the name is new to me, neither I heard it before nor i saw it before, but at my friends home in kolkatta, it was very common. The people of Kolkatta, heavily rely on medicinal plants for traditional healthcare, using them to treat a wide range of ailments due to the readily available plant species and deep-rooted knowledge passed down through generations about their therapeutic properties. And that is why this Basak plant was growing in their courtyard.

I took note of this plant during my early morning walk, I assumed it to be wild, but it does not take long to known its health benefits. As I was about to leave the place, my friend came running started plucking few leaves. He wanted me to carry them to his relative home in the midway as his nephew is unwell with congested chest. He is referring it as Basak patta

Basak leaves, also known as Justicia adhatoda, are the leaves of a medicinal plant with many uses in Ayurveda. Well my friend pronounce it Vasuki patta (patta means leaves) Vasaka is a small evergreen shrub with green leaves and white flowers. Though this plant does not have any flowers yet. The basak plant is an evergreen shrub that can grow to be 3–6 ft (1–2 m) tall. It has dark green, elongated leaves that are smooth-edged and oppositely arranged.

On learning about the medicinal properties, I quickly asked him how the leaves can be used. In a hurry he suggested to Inhale the vapor after boiling the leaves and then keep the boiled water for various flu ailments. It was good Insight, considering, we are living not far enough, still unaware of this plant so far.

  • Basak leaves can be used as an ingredient in cough syrups.
  • Basak leaves may help with bronchitis.
  • Extracts from the basak plant can help wounds heal faster.
  • Basak leaves are also used to treat asthma, phlegm, and bleeding hemorrhoids.

On reseerching, i understood that the plant leaves contain quinazoline alkaloids, which are the active principles in the plant. The basak plant is also known as Malabar nut, Vasa, Adasa, Adhatoda Vasika.

Vasaka is a crucial plant drug in ancient Ayurveda and Unani medicine. The leaves, bark, roots, and flowers of the Basaka plant have been used in herbal medications for the past 2000 years. It was so strange, that we are unaware of all the natural gifts that are lying and blooming around us. Nature has made all the provision to take care of us, only things we are unaware of all the beautiful gifts that it has provided.

Peace!!
