Whenever the word 'dream' is mentioned, it is usually interpreted to mean so many things, while some people quickly refer it to mean aspirations other people term it as the process that goes on while we close our eyes to sleep and they are both correct.
However, for the purpose of this post, we will be talking about the dream that involves sleeping, you know that stuff that occurs whenever you go to bed and you find yourself doing other things ( I mean being active in the other life).
There have been lots of religious interpretations to the reason why people find themselves active in another realm while they appear to be sleeping in this realm, but in this post we will be taking a sneak peak at the psychological aspect of dreams, what do psychologist have to say about dream?
Descartes has accused dream to come in form of deceit, and one will not really know during the process that it is unreal. Descartes believed that the deceit that comes with dreams makes it difficult for people to be sure that they are not dreaming even while they are fully awake. He explained that there is no real mark that will help us distinguish clearly between if we are dreaming or awake.
Descartes believes that every activity in reality can be clearly replicated in our dreams and there won't be anything that signifies any difference therein.
Hobbes however disagreed with Descartes, as he was of the opinion that even if we cannot ascertain what is going on while dreaming, it is possible to know for sure that we are awake and not dreaming when we are.
Hobbes went further to state that there is usually an absurd feeling that one gets while dreaming, but it fades away when one is fully awake.
Locke' however is in agreement with Hobbes, as he mentioned that there is a clear difference between our activities in the dream and our activities while we are awake. He further mentioned that the act of pain that we feel in the dream is clearly different from what we feel in reality.
The principle of coherence states that if you can conveniently connect your activities with everything around you, then it means you are awake and you are not dreaming.
Sigmund Freud, in his book titled 'Die Traumdeutung' had described the act of dream as a conceptualized phenomenon that expresses a person's inner life.
The Islamic philosophers are not left out of this deal as Avicenna claimed to have studied in some books which includes Al-Nafs.
He clearly described the act of dreaming as a product that results from the imaginative faculty of the soul, he also sees certain similarities between dreams and prophecies.
With the various philosophical views on dreams and reality, what is your own opinion about it?
I will like to know your view about dreams and reality in the comment section.
