Hello friends of the hive! ... Today we will learn what is necessary about the power supply or power source; in the previous post I mentioned that my PC had been damaged and I would learn how to repair it.
Before uncovering the computer, we must make sure that the fault is not external, that is, to the electrical outlet or any device between it and the PC; such as: Regulator, UPS or even the cable itself, something very unlikely is that the power cable is badly connected but it can happen. Once we are really sure that the fault is in the PC, we can begin to check it.
Definition UPS: It means Uninterruptible Power System. At the time of a power failure, this device provides the PC with power for a short period of time in which we can save everything and turn it off correctly.
Fuente de alimentación. / Power supply.
To start checking this device it is very important that we know its characteristics in detail.
♦ 20 or 24-pin connector, also called ATX connector. Through this, the motherboard receives all the tensions with which it will activate the components (keyboard, mouse, front lights etc.) The technical name of this connector is Molex 39-01-2200.
♦ Auxiliary 4-pin connector (12V) provides a boost line for the processor and thus does not recharge the ATX connector. The technical name of this connector is Molex 39-01-2040.
♦ Connector used to supply power to storage devices such as: Hard drives, CD-DVD drives and other functions. The technical name for this connector is Molex 8981-04P.
♦ Connector for hard drives and Serial-ATA readers.
♦ And finally the connector for the floppy drive, which still exists in many power supplies despite being totally out of use. The technical name for this connector is AMP 171822-4.
Another detail to take into account is that some models of power sources have a switch, near the power connector, which serves to cut off the current, so we must verify that it is in the correct position; 0 is off and 1 is on.
Puentear la fuente de poder. / Bridge the power source.
In this part I will have to turn on the power supply without having it connected to the PC, to perform this test I will need to connect the source to the outlet and then to the 20 or 24 Pin Molex connector, I must join or make a bridge between the color cable green and some of the black cables, I will use a small cable that has bare ends, when I do this I will put the source in a short circuit and the fan should turn on, so we will have the assurance that the fault is or not in the source of power.
Hello @elmundodexa
Wow, you are a little computer repairer, I congratulate you. I repair other things in the house, but what has to do with computers, I prefer to call a technician Lol
Buen comienzo, poco a poco iras aprendiendo…
Hello dear @elmundodexao.
I liked this second post. Congratz!
I have a little anecdote to share:
It's not really a "zero", nor is it a "number one" or a "letter I".
These two characters that we see are to indicate if the circuit is "closed" (O) or "open" (I).
That character that we can interpret as a "zero" is actually a "circle" that symbolizes the closed electrical circuit.
I just wanted to share this curiosity with you.
This source checking method is actually what I call the "Mc.Giver method".
Over time I could realize that it is always better to have a power source tester since we could more accurately detect the type of failure that it presents and in which of the voltages is where the deficiency would be.

Cheers!
