I like your little experiment as it's a really nice "push-up" for the small authors and they are the fresh blood here on the chain! I hope I will get better soon and do the same tactic as you are doing, as it WORKS!
I realized that there also quite advanced users who don't get much interaction on their posts. It's also nice to help them since they proved their dedication to the blockchain already.

well, interaction and engagement is a two-way street... If you don't engage, others will not do it also... but, there are also other variables, like the craziness of the world... :)
Unfortunately we have a lot of that lately :-)
