Should we Discard all Connection with Old Employees or Retain Them?

in Project HOPE4 years ago

Since I started my business I have had a couple of employees who left for a reason or the other, but all of them left without a prior information about their decision to leave which made me very upset and I deleted their numbers from my mobile phone promising not to have anything to ever do with them again.

After some months, I realized that some of them will not pass by without stopping by to say hello, some come to patronize and even bring their friends to buy which made me develop a soft heart and then realized I may not have any need for the hatred in the first place, that they stopped working for me does not necessarily make them bad people and it does not mean I have been a good person either. Although I try to be very friendly and free with everyone that has worked with me but maybe there was something they could not just tell me about that made them leave the establishment.

I noticed a girl posted on her WhatsApp status that her former employee made a banner for her new business free of charge and I was thinking that I might have made a mistake in discarding all the other employees I have had. It is not such a bad idea to keep in touch with former employees, I got back the numbers of two that I saw last week and I will try to keep in touch with them, I also tried to carry out a little research on if it is proper to discard old employees completely and what I found gave me a complete change of heart.

Benefits that can be offered by old employees.

Former employees have benefits they can offer, that they are no longer working for you does not make them useless to your company. Former employees can become a great referral to your company, staying in touch with them could make them refer more people to patronize your product.

Your former staff/employees can provide you with the advice that your current staff may not be able to provide, your present staff may be scared of telling you some truth for the fear that they may lose their jobs but your former staff with whom you have maintained a close relationship, will be able to tell you the truth about your business.

Your former employee may be working with your competitor, keeping a close relationship with them will help you get all the information you may seek about your competitor.

Sort:

Employees out of your workplace should not be out of your business entirely. I think the best line of action to take is to set a friendly environment for work. It's the kind of environment you set as the leader that determines if they open up on their views and ideas.

Thanks for coming around.

Well said my friend, but in addition, there is much to life than just our business. Even if our former employee is not useful to our business, they might be useful in other areas or aspect of our activities in life.

I like that really true, thanks for coming around.

For what you very well explain in this post it can be very favorable to keep the connection with former employees, since by not working in the company they can talk to us and say things with more honesty since by not being employed they do not have any fear of losing their jobs.

Greetings and thanks for sharing this very reasonable post.

Thanks a lot for visiting.

Employees are productive resources when they are working within the establishment, and networking resources when they are out of the establishment. As you have noticed, former employees can bring customers - either directly or indirectly - and increasing exposure is always good for business. Moreover, in many industries the environment can be surprisingly connected and networking becomes a key factor for success: this is for instance the premise of LinkedIn.

Very correct thanks a lot for visiting.
