Topic of the day: My favorite singer

image.png

Personally I am not a person that has favorite things. I really like some stuff but I can't decide if I like this more than that. I don't have a favorite song, I have favorite songs. I don't have favorite band, I have favorite bands. And so on.

Nevertheless, if I have to choose one singer it has to be Layne Staley. I have listened to a lot of music, trust me, a lot. And to be really honest, no one gave me that amount of chills on the spine and goosebumps he has. His voice was incredible, haunting. And I'm short of adjectives to describe it.

But, for those who doesn't know, who was he?

He was lead singer and co-songwriter for the grunge band Alice in Chains. With them, he released 3 studio albums, 3 EP and 1 MTV Unplugged. He was also part of the band Mad Season and released 1 studio album with them. But he was mostly known for being the lead singer of Alice in Chains.

Sadly, characteristic of the members of the grunge bands he fought a great part of his life against depression and addictions to drugs and alcohol. Those addictions eventually led him to his death at 34 year old.

But well, we have to remember him for who he was. He was really really talented and his voice is one of the best I've ever heard. Better than trying to describe how good his voice was, here's a video and you'll know of what I'm talking about.

If you liked that, then I recommend you to check Alice in Chains discography. You will not regret it.

We are so much on the same wave length. For sure, I dont have a single favourite band, artist...and unlike you, I cant even come up with one when I really have to. At gunpoint, I may not even say a single name... Though at gunpoint, I may simple pick one more or less randomly; Essentially, lie about it :)

Thats d*mn sad. But isnt true for many super creative and artistic people, the same applies? Maybe because of their depressions and subsequently their hard lives, they are able to create great art in whatever form.

Haha to be really honest I couldn't come up with one, except Layne. He is the exception to all of that. But on every other thing, I would be like you.

Indeed, grunge was a very dark genre. A recurrent topic on grunge songs was in fact depression. More generally, it is true for many people really good on what they do. We don't have to go that far for talking about that. Maradona died a few days ago and regardless of what you think of him as a person, he was an excellent footballer. But all of that success wasn't enough for him to be really fulfilled and at the end, that led him to his own self destruction. Same happened with Kurt Cobain and Layne. I watched a documental about Kurt a few years ago (I'm a grunge lover tbh haha) and his parents divorced at a very young age. That could have affected him. Layne's girlfriend died a years before his death. All of those lifes were really tragic, sadly. Althought Maradona's life was different from Kurt and Layne, it's another case of why is so common to have really famous and successful people struggling with those issues. My point is that be famous or successful on what you do doesn't guarantee happiness and that's why is so common to see that

Absolutely agree. Success, fame and even money doesnt give happiness, happiness comes from the connections we make with people. When these are deep, we feel better, we feel we are not alone, part of something. Any joy we get from being famous, succesful and money, is just instant happiness, a kinda of happiness which in the end is not real life long term happiness.
