djent scene is characterized by complex rhythms adopted from traditional progressive metal but using much more distorted guitars with the palm mute technique from which the onomatopoeia that gives the genre its name comes from.
I remember that my first approach to the genre was with the band Animal as Leaders without knowing that the band Meshuggah was the one that coined the name of this sound. Regardless of this, the first time I listened to Animal As Leaders I was impressed by the skill of their musicians in lead guitarist Tosin Abasi who achieves impressive sweeps and speed coupled with a characteristic sounding technique.
La escena djent se caracteriza por ritmos complejos adoptados del metal progresivo tradicional pero usando guitarras mucho más distorsionadas con la técnica palm mute de donde viene la onomatopeya que le da el nombre al género.
Recuerdo que mi primer acercamiento al género fue con la banda Animal as Leaders sin saber que la banda Meshuggah fue la que acuño el nombre de este sonido. Independientemente de esto, la primera vez que escuche a Animal As Leaders me impresiono la habilidad de sus músicos en principal del guitarrista principal Tosin Abasi que consigue unos barridos impresionantes y una velocidad aunada a una técnica con un sonido característico.
This music is recommended for people who like complex music and who know how to appreciate the technicality in each of the instruments. Based on progressive metal, we can intuit that it is a markedly academic style and many of its members come from Berkley, such as Tosin Abasi.
In the case of Animal as Leaders the music is instrumental, with very bass guitars using eight strings to reproduce that type of sound. The drums play with perfectly executed setbacks, turning this music into something mathematical and almost robotic, which has been criticized by some musicians who say that there is a lack of feeling.
Esta música es recomendable para personas a las que les guste la música compleja y que sepan apreciar la tecnicidad en cada uno de los instrumentos. Teniendo como base el metal progresivo podemos intuir que se trata de un estilo marcadamente académico y muchos de sus integrantes son salidos de Berkley como lo es Tosin Abasi.
En el caso de Animal as Leaders la musica es instrumental, con guitarras muy graves usando ocho cuerdas para reproducir ese tipo de sonido. La batería juega con contratiempos ejecutados a la perfección convirtiendo a esta música en algo matemático y casi robótico lo que ha sido criticado por algunos músicos que dicen que hay una carencia de feeling.
Another musician who is not directly related to the scene but does make strong winks to the djent is Angel Vivaldi. This is a virtuoso guitarist but he doesn't do the shredding typical of other guitarists like Satriani or Malsteem but rather creates a unique sound, carrying the genes of metalcore, djent, progressive and jazz. Angel Vivaldi with his guitar achieves unique and catchy melodies something that is rare in this genre.
On the more extreme side that this genre has to offer we find the acclaimed Born of Osiris who mixes deathcore with djent, achieving breakdowns never seen before and making a heavy but progressive and perfectly executed sound.
When listening to this genre you will be able to realize that this is an evolution of progressive metal using more modern elements such as electronic music that often give it a futuristic vision, in fact many of the lyrics of the genre are of transhumanist or science fiction themes which It can be attractive to lovers of this type of art.
This is one of the genres that I personally listen to the most, there are not a vast amount of bands because it is relatively new with just over 15 years. Take a step forward by creating new musical textures offering us something fresh to listen to in these days where the monotony on an artistic level is more accentuated every day.
Otro músico que no está directamente relacionado con la escena pero si le hace fuertes guiños al djent es Angel Vivaldi. Este es un guitarrista virtuoso pero no hace el shredding típico de otros guitarristas como Satriani o Malsteem sino creo un sonido único, portador de los genes del metalcore, djent, progresivo y jazz. Angel Vivaldi con su guitarra logra melodías únicas y pegajosas cosa que es poco común en este género.
En el lado más extremo que este género tiene para ofrecer encontramos a la aclamada Born of Osiris que hace una mezcla entre deathcore con djent, logrando unos breakdowns nunca antes vistos y haciendo un sonido pesado pero progresivo y perfectamente ejecutado.
Al escuchar este género podrán darse cuenta que esta es una evolución del metal progresivo usando elementos más modernos como la música electrónica que le dan muchas veces una visión futurista, de hecho muchas de las letras del genero son de temática transhumanista o de ciencia ficción lo que puede ser atractivo para los amantes de este tipo de arte.
Este es uno de los géneros que personalmente escucho más, no hay una vasta cantidad de bandas porque es relativamente nuevo contando con poco más de 15 años. Da un paso hacia adelante al crear nuevas texturas musicales ofreciéndonos algo fresco que escuchar en estos días donde la monotonía a nivel artístico cada día está más acentuada.
