10Km is the right distance as it is not too short or too long. A warm up requires a good couple of kilometers so a 5Km run is a joke as you well know once you get started it becomes easier and easier. We used to do a 10Km every evening after a full day of exercise and training in the army and the more frequently you do this it becomes nothing. I am currently walking 5km or so in the evenings and will start ramping that up into a jog of sorts before hitting the 10Km target 3 times weekly. I need to shed some weight (10Kg's) and this is the best way to get it done without killing myself first lol.

it really does. Before I started tackling distances, and I know 10k isn't really that far, I always though that the 2nd wind or getting into your stride was just some myth made up by cardio nutters, but as it turns out they are absolutely correct.
10kg is a good objective, you are a bigger guy from what I remember so this should fall off of you in a month or so provided that your diet isn't terrible.
Yes as soo as you get past the 10 minute mark I guess you are warmed up and it some how does not seem hard to maintain. I remember training with 2 other guys who were supposed to pick me up and didn't so I ran the 5km or so to our running spot and caught them up much to their surprise. I will shed 10kg's over 8 weeks and is not a big deal as I have done this many times before and importantly need to enjoy the process.
