Description from Strava: A couple of very cold and icy runs, 2 days in a row...

1st up was Wednesday (yesterday). It has been bitterly cold here in the last week or so, and we had the same weather on Wednesday. I was scheduled to be in the office, and while most of my journey to work is on public transport, I still need to walk to bus stops. Although it was pretty chilly (at -6C) , i was surprised by the apparent lack of ice, the paths seemed to be so dry that no ice had formed.

It was a different story heading back home, and I nearly slipped on several ice patches, walking on the paths from the bus stop to my front door.

you might think I would make excuses and avoid a run this evening, but its only the 9th day of January, and I'm still in a highly motivated 'new year, new me' frame of mind.

This meant I was determined to go for a run, and so throwing caution to the wind, I laced up my shoes, and put on all the layers so I could keep warm, and went for it:

One thing I did notice, was the paths were much worse than the roads. So very early into the run, I decided to stick to the roads for as much as possible. As I was mostly running on small and unbusy housing estates, that was actually quite easy to do. The other reason for sticking to the village was of course streetlights.

I was running after 6pm, and it was night time. The streetlights helped pick out the glistening ice patches. Even so, I still made sure I was slow and careful while watching my footing. It meant it wasn't a very relaxing run, and it was slow, but I was pleased I managed to get it done.

The following day was a different story.

For starters, I was at home, which meant I could avoid the icy commute to work in the morning. It also meant I could finish work at 4pm, and thus I was able to go out for a run in actual daylight.

The conditions underfoot were the same, as the weather was identical to yesterday: cold and dry with scattered ice patches.

But the fact that I was in daylight resulted in me being able to better see what was ahead, and so I was more confident in my running

...and much more relaxed!

The route today was shorter than yesterday, as I'm still taking it easy, but 4km (for 30 minutes) was a reasonable workout.

My Garmin watch is still telling me that my training is 'unproductive' and I keep telling it to 'shove off', but thats a story for another time I guess!

Tomorrow I'm in the office for the last day of work for this week (and the last day before my holiday time starts, whoop whoop! We aren't going away anywhere, but it'll be nice to get some time off work, and I can spend some quality time with my partner before she heads back to uni next weekend.

My next run will be on Saturday, and you can join as I make more excuses about not going to parkrun! The weather should have warmed up a little by then... so thats something to look forward to at any rate haha!

About the Athlete: Living in the UK, I am an intermittent Runner, but always striving for more consistency. When I'm not training I can be found photographing insects or listening to really loud angry music (which is the best type of music obviously!)

@dannewton, I sent you an

!LOL so frustrating!

I know what has caused it... my running slowed down in the 1st half of December, stopped completely in the 2nd half, and only in January am I getting back into it again.

It's not 'back to square one' but feels like it. I don't expect to leap back into where I used to be, but those little notifications after each run still feel a little demoralizing! 🤣

Ignore it, I say!

But I hear you: Brad and I have been focused on doing Zone 2 running and he's making far more progress than me because he is better at running Every Single Day. !LOL Meanwhile, I did a warm up yesterday. Was happy to see that I was jogging in the middle of my Zone 2 range. So I started another activity on my watch. But it only took 11 minutes of running for my heart rate to start rising and rising and rising!

It FELT the same. And I even resorted to running slower (from 12 minute pace down to about 16 minute pace!) but by the 20 minute mark it had climbed to 174 which is well into my Zone 4. So I thought I better call it quits for the day!

Hmmm, somehow I made this about me. Haha. I think I'm commiserating with you. Frustrating! Yeah! Haha. I think all we can do is commit and recommit to the practise of running and let the results take care of themselves. !HUG

I will ignore it! 😁

It's only a glorified algorithm anyway (or thats what I tell myself!)

Oh man, I'm not even managing to do the zone 2 thing at the moment... I'm concentrating on regular sessions, and slowly increasing the distance as i prefer the longer runs. Besides, the constant heart rate alerts just feels like a distraction, and a barrier to actually enjoying it.

And we should be vaguely enjoying this, right?

Hmmm, somehow I made this about me

!LOL Always appreciate your views/take/experience, feel free to keep sharing :-)

Very wise words Caroline (as I've come to expect ;-) we just need to 'trust the process'

Maybe your garmin wants you to go to parkrun so it can hang out with some other garmin watches. !LOL

!LOL well I really tried today, but due to recent snow/ice across the UK, parkruns have been cancelled up and down the country... so maybe next week I guess!!
