I see this as a gap in the educational sector than an issue with the "degree" itself. Several professors in some knowledge domain have never experienced the industry, they've been confined to the 4 walls of academia all their lives researching and writing journals that ends up in publication with no tangible output.

Take the field of medicine as a case study, an individual can hardly become a professor in medicine without acquiring the necessary skills to practice, this can be attributed to the synergy between the academia and the industrial sector in that field.

Can skills be acquired in schools? Yes.

Is the curriculum and approach to passing the knowledge helping? No!
