Social media has its own way of magnifying a lot of things. A lot of things we didn’t pay much attention to,once it hits the Instas and TikToks, it blows off and becomes a huge trend. Now we’re talking about soft life, and it goes all the way back to the socials. First, it started with the discovery of the word “steeze,” which basically means doing things your own way and with ease. Not being bothered by anything.
You’re late to work. It’s totally fine, your boss can wait. You don’t want to be seen running around and panicking because of that, no. What will happen to your steeze?
Maximum composure at all times.
The idea of soft life isn’t bad at all. If we’re to be completely honest, everyone deserves even just a moment of taking things at ease. Life is full of troubles, and as such, the idea of having the time of our lives even if it’s just once is a very good one. No wonder @abenad is always talking about her arabian prince that has refused to come and give her baby girl treatment.
Sorrows. Prayers
But what if we become obsessed with what social media actually portrays as soft life?
I saw a post somewhere on X, I can’t remember the entirety of the post, but I do remember it read along the lines of:
“The Gen Zs are obsessed with the aesthetics of life. Everyone wants to drive the latest car models, take aesthetically pleasing pictures, go to the fanciest restaurants, and take mirror pictures, as if that’s the only thing life is about.”
While reading through the post, I found myself nodding in agreement to the truthfulness of the observation. Rightly though, a lot of people were born into the soft life. They don’t have to work twice as hard as everyone else to be able to live a good life. My concern, however, goes out to the regular humans, the growing teens especially, who have this distorted view about soft life. They tend to see it as just a life of enjoyment. Going on vacations, planning trips, fancy houses, and eating 5-star meals minus the part where they have to work to get to that point.
I believe that most good things of life come with a certain input of hard work. I mean, you can’t be dreaming of all those vacations and the rest of the good life packages and you’re not ready to work to make it happen because apparently you don’t want stress. You want to wake up in the morning, eat, sleep, rinse and repeat, but you really don’t want any discomfort, no work-related stress whatsoever, and definitely no sweat? I’m going to be needing a lot of convincing to understand that theory.
The influencers we see on the socials don’t always show the hard work and efforts they put in to be able to afford the lifestyle they live. They only show all the fancy of living big, which creates a somewhat misleading definition of soft life and success. Because there is somebody somewhere watching that TikTok and shouting “God when?” but still the laziest person you might ever meet.
Soft life has been glorified on social media to mean a life of luxury and aesthetics, hiding the true fact that efforts need to be put in place to enjoy those. It’s such a huge misinterpretation to the younger generation and the public at large. Everyone wants to be a big boy/girl but avoids the necessary struggle required to become one.
Personally, I think soft life goes beyond the everyday enjoyment and luxury people think it to be. It goes beyond just relaxing and being taken care of. All those are just the social media illusion of the matter and can be quite unrealistic. True soft life entails choosing calm over life’s chaos. Saying no to things that may rob us of our peace. Finding joy even in the simplest of things, which may even include indulgence in enjoyment as the case may be. Investing in internal happiness and prioritising well-being and self-care over everything.
Though soft life may have been misunderstood on the socials, the need arises to strike a balance between going through the necessary struggles of life and finding the means to ease ourselves. It doesn’t necessarily mean avoiding all forms of discomfort, rather choosing which discomfort is actually worth going for and blending rest and ease into it. That is what makes for true soft life.
