HiveFest 2024 and Ghana - Echoes from the past

in HiveGhana2 days ago

Sometimes I have so many thoughts, that get filtered and forgotten, and even if the ideas are coming one after another, they get lost in the crowd's eternal noise.

I was talking about Hive boreholes with @mcsamm during Hivefest, and we were a few people around, brainstorming ideas. The main issue was that electricity is not always available and that internet activity is linked to blackouts, so the young people living in rural communities do not have continuous access to the internet. And the possibility of somehow creating something linked to the borehole project.

So, here I am, finding some notes related to a crude design, as a starting point:

I used Tesla tech as a reference, but probably any equivalent can be used, except that they may be more bulkier.

1 . Starling dish and router - link: https://www.starlink.com/

Standard Plan: Priced at GH₵770 per month, this plan provides unlimited data, making it suitable for households and individuals with moderate internet usage.

Standard Priority Plan: Available for GH₵1,078 per month, the Priority Plan offers unlimited standard data, along with additional features such as public IP access, network priority, and priority support. It’s ideal for businesses and users with high data demands.

Roam Mobile Plan: Starting at GH₵1,540 per month, this plan is designed for those who need internet connectivity on the go, including remote workers, campers, and businesses operating in various locations. It offers unlimited mobile data within Ghana, with pricing adjustments based on the desired level of priority data.

Roam Priority Plan (BOATS): Tailored for maritime users, emergency responders, and mobile businesses, this plan provides specialized features like inland and ocean use data, network priority, and priority support. The cost ranges from GH₵4,428 per month for 50GB of data to GH₵17,710 per month for 1TB of additional data.

How much does the Starlink router and dish (hardware) cost for Ghanaians?
In addition to the subscription fees, customers will need to purchase the necessary hardware, which includes a Starlink dish and router. The hardware cost is currently GH₵5,390, with an additional GH₵354 for shipping.

2 . Tesla solar roof tiles with Powerwall included - Link: https://www.tesla.com/solarroof

It is about $15 per watt of solar installed or $63 per square foot of roof space.

3 . Wifi access point - on Jumia you can find a 5.8G E120A 300Mbps Wireless Bridge Network Wifi CPE 3KM Transmission with GH₵ 719.00

4 . The water pump as it is now.

5 . You can also add some USB plugs as charging points for mobile.

6 . The Powerwall is coming with the solar roof tiles.

I was also thinking about putting some benches, and then there you go, a nice place to gather as a community and provide internet access continuously, as the solar tiles should get the electricity, and the Powerwall will store it, so it is even available overnight. There are more than enough sunny hours in Ghana to make this work (Accra's average annual DNI of 1158.5 kWh/m2 alongside a solar panel efficiency of 17.5% according to Nocheski Solar, 2019)

This is the starting point, and we can discuss it from here if there is any way to assist or research more about it.

Getting access to stable internet connection can sometimes be a challenge in some parts of the country. This does sound like a nice solution.
Thanks for coming up with this brilliant idea. Let’s look around it.

I recall the valuable information shared at Hivefest, which will greatly benefit this project. I am optimistic that we will eventually garner global attention to improve more lives. Thank you for your support @heruvim1978
