This season and its weather

in HiveGhana21 days ago

The end-of-the-year weather, which I fondly call Christmas weather, is one I don't like because of how harsh it is. My country experiences two major weather seasons: the dry and rainy seasons. Of the two, I love the rainy season so much because of how fresh and cool it feels.

Anything related to the dry season, especially this period mixed with harmattan, is a big turn-off for me. It makes my body feel and look rough, as though I haven't had a bath, especially when I go out walking or engage in fieldwork. My legs end up looking rough, as if I had walked through a recently burnt area where ashes stain the skin. I dislike that dirtiness a lot.

I have often wished Christmas occurred during the rainy season or, conversely, that the rainy season came at the end of the year.

Apart from the roughness that this season brings, I don't enjoy the extreme cold that comes with it. I know the rainy season is also associated with cold weather, but that cannot compare to the harmattan cold. Harmattan cold comes in such an extreme manner that one finds it difficult to take a bath in the morning without using hot water. I must give a thumbs-up to those living in freezing countries because I can’t imagine coping in such climates. The thought of having to pray before taking a bath or possibly going a day without bathing because of the cold is unimaginable to me.

This time of year, due to the dryness, one would expect fewer symptoms of sickness compared to the rainy season. However, the cold associated with harmattan contributes significantly to illnesses such as malaria and runny noses.

For instance, yesterday, I went out with a friend and felt thirsty, so I decided to buy sachet water. Unfortunately, all the water available was cold from the refrigerator. I had no other option but to buy it. I bought two sachets, intending to share with my friend, but when he noticed the water was cold, he refused, saying it had been giving him malaria recently. That’s how harmful the harmattan cold can be.

What Have I Been Doing to Stay Fine and Resist the Harshness of the Season?

I have been bathing with warm water in the morning. I only use cold water in the afternoon or early evening when the weather is still warm. At night, if I need to bathe and it’s still cold, I stick to warm water. I don’t compromise on this at all.

I wear socks whenever I go out. Yes, I dislike seeing my feet get dirty as if I had walked in a newly burnt bush.

So far this year, I haven’t fallen ill. However, if I notice even a slight symptom, I quickly take medicine to avoid worsening the situation.

Thank you!
