Volleyball is one of the favorite sports of Ghanaians. I can arguably say that volleyball is played in all 16 regions of Ghana , but not all Regions pay much attention to the sport as compared to football .
It is effectively played in regions such as greater Accra Region, Eastern Region, Northern region ,western Region, and the Central Region.
All these regions listed above play volleyball leagues but the most consistent, effective and competitive one of all is the Greater Accra Volleyball League (GAVL)
The GAVL consists of not less than 14 volleyball teams in the male category and also not less than 12 teams in the female category , these teams come together to compete with each other to improve their standings in the league .The various security services in the country formed volleyball teams that compete in the GAVL , such as the Ghana police , Ghana Army, Ghana Air Force ,Ghana Navy, Ghana Prisons , Ghana Immigration and the Ghana Fire Service. Other Civilian volleyball teams, such as, Immanuel presby church, Elwak wings , OSU youth, La pioneers , TCL and many more , also participate in the Greater Accra volleyball league.
The league typically begins in March of every year, to November.This league has been in existence for the past 15 years. The team that tops the league at the end of the season ,receives a trophy and other incentives in both men's and women's category .
Teams like Immanuel presby church (IPC) and Tema City do not have a female team. The rules, regulations,and principles governing the league were enacted by the Ghana volleyball Association (GVA).The league matches are often played on weekends and officiated by qualified volleyball referees in the Country,
unless there are outstanding matches,that the two teams involved agree to play on a week day .
OFFICIALS
The police volleyball team has dominated the league , for the past 10 years, they won the league tittle more than any other team.
They have much talented players as compared to the rest of the teams. Most of the Police Team players play in the Ghana National Volleyball Team.
THE POLICE MEN'S TEAM
Other competitions are played alongside the league including Winnabig volleyball competition, Yokohama Civilian volleyball competition, Champions of Champions and Super Volleyball Championship (SVC) are the very few that I can mention.
The Super Volleyball Championship is currently the top ranked volleyball Competition in the country. Although the GAVL is played outdoors rather than indoors, the SVC is exceptional. The Super Volleyball Championship is played indoors( in a hall ) which makes the competition more attractive and very competitive.
It is played at the end of the season and lasts for four to five days.
The top six teams on the GAVL table at the end of the season automatically qualify for the Super Volleyball Championship competition , in both men's and women's category .
FOUNDER OF THE SVC
These six teams will be divided into two groups ( A &B) which constitutes group stage, two teams from each group qualify for the semifinals in both the men's and women's category.
The inaugural edition of this great competition was held in 2021 at the Bokum Arena (Gamashie Hall) in Bokum, the Great Accra Region, Ghana .
The team that places first in the competition is crowned the champion and receives a Medal🥇, Trophy 🏆 and a cash prize 💰,the second-place team receives Medal🥈and a cash prize ,the third place team also receives Medal and a cash prize 🥉.
There are also awards for outstanding individual performances in the competition.
Individual awards include Best setter, Best opposite player , Best Outside Hitter , Best middle Blocker , Best Libero,Best Server, Best Young Player of the Competition, Most Promising Player and Most Valuable Player (MVP) .
During the inaugural edition in2021,The Ghana Air Force merged as the men's champion 🏆🥇 , Ghana Police took second 🥈place while Ghana Army finished third🥉 .
In contrast, Ghana Army won the women's tittle 🥇 , Elwak Wings took second place 🥈, and third 🥉 place went to Ghana Police.
