Our lives become more interesting and pleasant thanks to the people we surround ourselves with, such as our family, friends, and colleagues, and one way to get the best from them and as well maintain the relationship is keeping up with them in a way where it'll be seen as a mutual relationship with shared values. Even though I'm saying all of these, I'm personally not the best when it comes to keeping up with others, and it's something I've been trying through the years to change and improve the way I communicate with others.
Everyone needs others in their lives, because we can't just live life by ourselves; at one point or another we're going to need to interact with others, and not just casual interactions; we need people whom we cherish and who do the same towards us; that way we'll live each day knowing that we're not alone. Even though I'm an introvert and love being by myself mostly, I can't disregard the importance of people around us and the need to keep up with them. When it becomes too obvious that they're the only ones trying, it'll get to a point where they'll stop trying, and then you'll have no one to look up to.
Keeping up with others isn't because of days when we lack and need help, so we'll have them to call; keeping up is a sign that we cherish and appreciate someone and are willing to lookout for them through tick and thin, and days when we needed help, be it emotional support, monetary or physical, we can also reach out, but when you forget about others and only remember you've got them when ever something from them, then with time they'll realize and distance themselves from you.
Like I said, I'm not a saint in this conversation because I personally don't know how to lookout for others. It's not like I'm doing such intentionally, but sometimes I just let myself get carried away by work or other activities I'm indulging in to the point where I won't have time to call my family, friends, or colleagues. It's kind of annoying because, in truth, I do think about them almost every day, but rather than call them, I just find myself procrastinating that, saying I'll call them later when I'm done, and before you know it, I'll forget, and that continues sometimes from days to weeks and months.
Sometimes this continues for long to the point where they're the ones who later check up on me, and then seeing their calls, I'll become to feel bad because I know I promised I'd check up but ended up not doing that, but seeing how this affected me in different ways, I've been making some changes in the last few months to make sure I checked up on my loved ones.
Although it's kind of funny that someone is doing this, then I'm okay resorting to it if it'll help me remember to check up on them, and how I do that is by setting a schedule reminder on my phone calendar with a key word reminding me to call my friends, family, and loved ones. Since setting this schedule on my calendar for different months, there have been changes.
And why there were changes is because when the alarm sounds and I'm busy then, I quickly remembered why I set the alarm in the first place, which is because I used to procrastinate calling, so instead I just put aside anything I'm doing and call each one or them there and then, and paraventure I'm on an official meeting when such rang, I just rescheduled or snore the alarm to remind me later that day.
Even though measures to remember to keep up with my family, friends, and colleagues seem awkward, yet I'm fine with it because it's helping me change the situation of things like they used to be, and I'm hoping to grow to a point where I won't need such an alarm or schedule reminder to call before I do that in the near future.
