I know many people dream of having a big wedding, with all the glamour, dancing, and celebration (which is beautiful, by the way!). But beyond the excitement, have you thought about the legal side of marriage?
Some couples focus so much on traditional and church/mosque weddings that they forget about the legal protection that comes with a court wedding.
A court wedding isn’t just a formality, it’s the official stamp that recognizes your marriage in the eyes of the law.
Why Should You Consider a Court Wedding?
Now, imagine this: after many years together, something happens (God forbid), and suddenly, your spouse’s family says, “You were never legally married to our son/daughter.” Imagine the stress! That’s why a court wedding is important, it gives you legal proof that your marriage is valid and binding.
What Do You Need to Do?
If you’re planning a court wedding, here’s what you need to know:
Make Sure You’re Eligible
You and your partner must be 18 years and above.
Both of you must agree to the marriage without force or pressure.
You must not be married to someone else under statutory law.
Get Your Documents Ready, such as;
Birth certificates or age declarations.
Passport photographs.
A valid ID card (National ID, Driver’s License, Voter’s Card, or International Passport).
If you were married before, bring proof that the previous marriage has legally ended.
Follow these Process.
Go to the marriage registry and file a Notice of Marriage (this notice is displayed publicly for 7 days, 14 days, and 21 days, depending what you want).
After 21 days, if there are no objections, you get a date for your wedding.
On the day of the wedding, you both exchange vows before a registrar, sign your Marriage Certificate, and you’re officially married!
Court Wedding Etiquette: What to Expect
Dress decently! Some registries don’t allow certain outfits, so be mindful.
Bring at least two witnesses, one from your side, one from your partner’s side.
Arrive on time, government offices don’t joke with time!
