Kitchen door

These wooden steps had to be built to make the door to the apartment accessible. Here I just get lost in guessing, but I don't have any acceptable versions of why the apartment door was significantly above the level of the stairwell. Unless - designing the stairs was the task of the apprentice, and the master did not have time to check the drawings. A construction boom, an avalanche of orders, contractors fail, the ladies torment with their whims, the son was expelled from the gymnasium, not a single free minute.

Do you think this could not have happened in the leisurely 19th century? Perhaps, but this house was built in 1911-1912, that is, just at the time when Russian cities were engulfed by construction fever. And the century has already formally become the 20th, and he did not differ in leisurelyness.

The staircase in the photo is called a black staircase. These stairs were usually accessed by kitchen doors. Firewood was brought in along these stairs, waste was brought out - such stairs were not very purity, purity, so they are called black. This door almost certainly belongs to the kitchen of a large apartment.

A small window near the wooden steps, closed with an iron sheet, leads into a light well - a very small courtyard, which served for ventilation and lighting of household premises of apartments. The front entrance used by the residents is located on another staircase.

You're right about the 19th century. I perhaps remember the kind my grand father had before he passed away. It was literally just mud and wattle as was commonly used in Africa.

Cheers to the smart world where we are heading , some things are automatically going to be out of the picture and my children will surely miss them.

Some things are going to be out, no thing can last forever. I think a lot of new interesting things will appear in the lives of our children in return.
