The big cat that is most prevalent in Texas (where I am) is the cougar. While I have never seen one in person (except at a zoo), one was spotted in a neighborhood about 45 minutes from my house a couple of weeks ago.

There are a lot of cougars in Texas for sure. Two hundred years ago there were also a lot of jaguars as well but they were hunted into extinction in the US. It's a shame, they're pretty animals and don't attack people either! Cougars are pretty shy, they will sometimes wander near homes at night looking for easy prey like pets. I would worry if you see one that it might have rabies though, usually those big cats are really shy around people!
