Stepping Outside: A Chance to Recharge and Reconnect

This morning, I didn’t go to work because I was experiencing pain all over my body after leaving work yesterday. I informed my boss that I wouldn’t be able to come in. At first, she assumed nothing was wrong since my voice sounded fine, but I explained, “It’s not about my voice, ma; it’s just that I’m experiencing body pain.” I added that it might be due to engaging in vigorous activities throughout the week, which probably led to fatigue and stress. I also mentioned that our bodies need rest, and when they signal us, we should listen. Otherwise, we risk breaking down and being unable to perform our usual tasks.

When I woke up this morning, I still felt a sudden throb of pain all over my body. However, I had to get up because I needed to feed the animals in the backyard and water the plants. I reluctantly did that and went back to sleep afterwards. Not long after, I received a call from a friend who had been wanting to see me for a while, but I often gave excuses due to work and other commitments. He promised to come and pick me up, saying it had been a while since we last saw each other and that, since he was around, he’d like to meet me before leaving.

At first, I wanted to decline, but then I realized that stepping outside for a while to get some fresh air might do me good. So, I agreed.

He came as promised, and we went to a hotel and resort that had a bar and lounge where people could hang out. When we got there, he ordered food since he knew I hadn’t eaten, and I suspected he hadn’t either.

We had a meaningful conversation. He talked about his entrepreneurial ventures and investments, which amazed me. I also shared details about my work and engagements. I wasn’t ashamed to tell him I’m an educator. We’ve been friends since our secondary school days, so the conversation flowed naturally.

After some time, he decided to go for a swim and asked if I wanted to join him. I had to decline, explaining that I’m not a fan of swimming and, considering my current condition, I’d prefer to sit out. He went ahead to swim while I watched in amazement—I never knew he was such a good swimmer.

I must say, it felt great having the opportunity to see him since I don’t know when next we’ll meet. He acknowledged this, too.
