Cat Chess

On my last birthday, my boyfriend surprised me with an unusual gift. He wanted something we could do together because he knows how much I enjoy that. So, he made a custom chessboard, painted it by hand, and then bought the materials for us to create the pieces together, in our own way.

We decided that the pawns would be little cats. I was in charge of making the white ones, inspired by my cat, Tofu Augusto, while he made the black ones, inspired by his cat, Bolinho. We spent two or three days on this process, allowing time for the biscuit clay to dry, then painting them, and finally playing a few games on our board. It was such a fun experience, and it was also my first time working with biscuit clay. Since then, I’ve already started experimenting with other creations, which I’ll be sharing here soon!

The funny thing is that before we started, I looked up a lot of references and modeling tips, but no one ever mentions how hard it actually is! It seems simple in theory, but without the right tools, handling the clay takes way more patience than you’d expect. Still, it was a really fun process, and the result turned out amazing!
