It's so great to see someone having the same thoughts as me when I was still in secondary school.
I grew up in a village where my parents had to watch me to the last level. I have always been the type who doesn't love going out, nor do I love making friends.
Making the right choice has been my dream and my way of life.
While in secondary school, I woke up as early as possible just to meet the time so that I would not be late. Others always go with either a motorcycle that would take them to school or their parents would drop them off. My dad suggested going by motorcycle, but I objected. He raised the issue again after seeing the way I was suffering while trekking to school. My school was a little far from home.
I later took to his suggestion after my mom raised it loudly to my hearing to take to my dad's suggestion. I was having a different thought from the two, but then who am I to voice my mind out in front of my dad? The cyclists do come early to pick me up from school. He started so well until, one month later, he started missing his duties. He was supposed to come by 6 p.m., but he started coming late. I wanted to ask him to give me reasons why he was coming late, but then I had to reserve my words, as I knew what mine were. Dad would do.
Out of a week, he would miss two days. This got my mom angry, and I informed my dad about it. My dad, on the other hand, had to call the cyclist and give him the first, but last, warning.
The following week, he defaulted again, and my dad had to call me and ask if I still wanted this cyclist. I told him, “Dad, you and Mum did not wait for my choice before finalizing on getting a cyclist for me.”.
“What is on your mind, and what do you want?” My dad finally asked me.
“I do not want you to spend extra money or pay this cyclist anymore. I want a bicycle," I replied without leaving the last drop of water in my mouth.
“What!!” My dad exclaimed.
I was shocked when he uttered that statement, but then his last words gave me hope.
“Alright, if that's what you want, I know this will also save my pocket from leaking out," he replied.
That weekend, he bought me a bicycle—my kind of bicycle. He immediately stopped the cyclist from carrying me to school. I was so excited.
Some weeks ago, I called one of my students who always comes by bicycle and asked him, 'Why don't you follow the school bus or why didn't your dad get you a bicycle?’
“Master, it's a long story. I was initially coming to school by school bus, but we have relocated to a different area out of the reach of the school bus. My dad had tried one cyclist some time ago but failed due to his epileptic time missing or even days missing”, he replied.
“Is that the reason your dad bought you a bicycle?” I asked.
“I was certainly the one who wanted the bicycle, and at the same time, my dad had to see it as a means of saving money for him," he replied.
Immediately, I had to flash back to what had happened to me back in the day. My story was somehow similar to my student's.
My colleague at my school had a similar situation. He said he stopped following cyclists after a series of disappointments that caused him to trek from his house to the junction. His house is some tangible kilometers from the junction. Soc, he must get to the junction before the arrival of the school bus. So, he was not sleeping properly, and this made him buy a bicycle.
Presently, he is coming to school on his bicycle.
“What a similar storyline.”
