Cycling in the dunes and bicycle maintenance

in Cycling2 months ago

It has been a while since I've posted my last blog here in the Cycling Community. Cycling was on the back burner for a while.
My annual bike weekend with friends was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. We did go away, but we didn't go biking. We would have gone cycling in the Ardennes in Belgium. We now have to plan a new weekend...

Bicycle Maintenance

Because we would go for some long rides during the cycling weekend I had brought my bicycle to the bicycle repair shop for some maintenance. Since the Ardennes is a hilly environment I wanted my brakes and braking cables to be checked and also my gears to work smoothly.
I always have difficulties adjusting my derailleur with the cable and the adjustment screws. Somehow I always end up with a rattling chain or missing gears.
It had been quite a while since I had brought my bicycle to a mechanic, so they found some more issues with my bicycle. It added up to quite a large bill in the end. But my bicycle is running smoothly again. Too bad that the we didn't go cycling that weekend, but the maintenance was necessary anyways.
When I picked up my bicycle at the shop I had a chat with the owner of the shop about bicycles and me not being able to adjust my gears when needed. He told me about electronic shifting that becomes more common and affordable. Although affordable is relative since it still is quite expensive.
With electronic shifting there are no cables anymore. The shifters are buttons that send a wireless signal to the derailleur. Nothing has to be adjusted anymore. This would be a solution for my lack of skills. I think I will start saving for a new bicycle with electronic shifting.

Cycling in the dunes

Although we didn't go for rides during the cycling, I did make some rides at home in the past weeks. I've been commuting a lot and also made some rides with some friends in the weekend. One of the favorite routes we make are through the dunes. I live quite close to the sea and the coastal strip has quite a lot of nice cycling paths.
You can even cover the whole Dutch coast by bicycle, but that's a 610 km ride 😀

We didn't go for the whole coast, but just a part of it.
The cycling routes go through nature reserves, so there are no cars. Just other cyclists, runners and hikers.
The area is hilly, but there aren't any really steep climbs. It can be tough when you have a headwind since there is nowhere to hide 😃
But as you can see in the video we had quite a nice day. We always tend to go for an early ride since it can get very crowded with cyclists later on the day.

If you ended up here; Thanks for reading my blog!

I'm still owing you a post about gear adjusting 😬

Electronic gear solves one huge problem and creates another: battery. I heard Lachlan Morton ran out of battery (and algo from spares) on one of his insane marathons. Finished in one fixed gear.

An empty battery could indeed be a problem on one of your monsterly long rides 😃

Enjoyable safe cycling route to navigate mileage along!

Yes, indeed, it is a place where people practice sport, a lot of cycling or running. After 1:49 minutes a person runs past. I don't see any houses there. Nor anyone accompanying her. Well, further on I saw a crossing and some people on motorbikes. Maybe he or she is part of that group.
How many kms did you ride in those 5 minutes and a half?

It's a nature reserve, so no houses indeed. Our speed is often around 30 km/hour, so that would be 2,5 kilometer in 5 minutes.

It's safe running there at daytime. As you can see it's quite busy there. In between the long cycling paths through the dunes are some villages too, so she might live there or park near the start of the cycling path.

OK, thank you. As for saving up for the new bike with electronic gears, well, I applaud your new goal. I will be looking for a better bike in the future too when I learn a few things and have more experience.

Nice ride!

Looks fun but to much hard work for me, haha. I'll keep my feet on the ground. I was as a kid a very hard core bike rider, wish I had photos of my crazy high jumping with tricks but now not so easy.

Don't you own a bicycle anymore now?

I have a small electric bike, haha.
