RE: Cycling: Tubeless vs. Tubes — a nine months experience

in Cycling2 years ago

Well, for cross-country racing it totally makes sense. For my 3 month and 4000 km trip, using mostly less traveled roads (incl. the bottle strewn "crystal shoulder"), with the occasional forest trail or logging road, and still having only 4 flats in total (two of them on my last day!), I'm not sure if I would have done it tubeless. Those few roadside tube-changing sessions, annoying as they may have been at the time, remain an integral part of an overall positive experience. But maybe for more adventurous trips, like bike-packing on the Baja California divide, I can see going tubeless as a viable option.

You are lucky! I had several punctures in my trip; had two within 30 minutes. The worst part was not even fixing, but dealing with a wet and muddy bicycle 🤢

The only problem in longer trips is carrying sealant, although you should be fine for at least two or three months.

Aw man, that sucks! I know the wet and muddy situation very well, and I am thankful I never had to fix a flat in those conditions. But if I did... hahaha, I would most certainly switch to tubeless right away!
