Weekends on my homestead are like a bag of discounted holiday candy, you're going to have a good time, you just don't know what flavor you're gonna get next.
I walked out of my back door to do chores yesterday morning to this scene:
My first thought was what egregious thing had the root beer done to deserve such a fate.
The day just got more interesting from there.
On my agenda I had a couple of to do items. We are having unseasonably warm, awesome temps in the lower 80's, so I have been like a little post-hibernation iguana. Let's just say the sun has fully charged me and I am getting it all done.
Yesterday, after watering everything, I wanted to take my yard rake that is attached to my lawnmower and sweep up the three tons of pinecones around the Ponderosa pine trees that line my barnyard.
I got that task done. But shenanigans started while I was rolling around cone-in'
My brother rolled in with his KTM 500 and his TT 350. Our neighbor has a dirt bike too, and before you could say, let's send it, my bro, daughter, and neighbor were doing full Nitro Circus about the place.
I just turned up my flower farming podcast, smiled, and went about my cone catching.
Later, after getting distracted by the legion of blooming daffodils around the farm, I took a little siesta in my hammock before having a great talk story session with the two wheeler daredevils.
Just southwest of my house is a massive electrical rightaway that everyone rides their ATV's, UTV's, horses, and vehicles on. Right next to my property is a two hundred foot straight down drop with a road cut up the side. Apparently while my fam was up there someone in a brand new, stock, Duramax diesel pickup thought they would drive straight down the mountain. Bro stopped them before a bad idea because a big bill. Sigh.
After firepit chat I went down the highway to game night at my friends, which was nice. Before I got there I went to the grocery store for game snacks. When I came out of the grocery store, my husband was standing at the rear of our car with a lady who was gesturing animatedly.
She started apologizing to me before I even got to them. She had gotten her Chevy Avalanche out of the storage shed from where it had been sitting since last fall (which was evident by the underinflated tires). Well, as she was backing out of the spot next to us, the Avalanche died, and some really nice boys pushed her back into her parking spot.
The problem was that she didn't crank the wheel enough, and her front quarter panel was six inches away from my driver's door.
Good thing I am a hobbit😁.
After squeezing in, I drove us over to our friends where we had a lovely evening of trash talking and vampire rpg game playing before we drove home at about ten-thirty. I was tooling along at the speed limit, looking for errant forest rats, when I noticed a pair of headlights hurtling up behind us. I didn't hate the driver because they dimmed their high beams a good distance from us, but as they flew by at us at about ninety or so I thought I recognized the vehicle.
Sure enough, when I got home my son and his friend were sitting there, told me I was slow, and proudly stated they had got our neighbor kid home by his curfew.
Great.
As I had driven in though, I noticed a fire in my neighbors back yard, and noticed my brother waving. After doing all the chores I had done that day, I was ready to turn in.
Life wasn't about to let me.
Bro and our neighbor K had a nice bonfire going. My daughter, her friend, our son, and his friend were all over there eating pizza and drinking pop as my brother and his friend drank adult beverages.
They then got the electric golfcart out.
If you heard the Jackass theme song in your head just now, that would be accurate.
The golf cart has no headlights, so they used a light up, pulsating Blu-tooth speaker as a means of lighting and one of the first things they did was drive up to my window, flash the light in it, and shout, Dominos Pizza!.
There was some golf cart hill climbing, teenagers running through my fields and spotlighting the hurtling golf cart, howling huskies orchestra, and a whole lot of revelry.
I slept through it all.
This morning they are all a bit quiet. My son got up and got his shotgun and gear together for practice. He just smiled at me as I made an extra large pot of coffee for my bro.
"It's been a pretty good weekend so far," my son replied in his deadpan Hawaiian tone.
"Indeed it has, my spawn, indeed it has," I replied.
And there's still a whole day left to go!
Great analogy Kat! Life on the homestead is just that. You really never know what you are going to get. But the best part is when it's not that nasty tasting. And it seems like you got the bonus bag of yummy candy
