Yesterday, I got up and got moving at 5:25 AM. This is not an unusual occurrence, I am a homesteader, college student, wife, and mother, so most days I fall out of bed and get cracking. All last summer I got up at 4:30 AM to run the theme park bakery, it's how I roll.
Yesterday though, yesterday I kept rolling without stopping for seventeen hours.
It was a day.
You see, my brother's birthday was Thursday, and as he's been having a not so great run of things lately, I really wanted him to have a smashing fete to celebrate him being here. My mom was on board with this plan, and before we had all collaborated very much, a pretty sizeable house party was planned at my place.
So, this week I hustled my flintlocks through all the schoolwork and lifework I had to do so that Friday I could devote the day to celebrating my baby brojah.
And celebrate we did!
The hubs picked up Bro in the neighboring town he lives in, about twenty miles away, as the hubs had to go to a bi-weekly appointment of his. This was a bit of an unusual thing, as the bro has a truck, but his truck is kaput at the moment with a mysterious ailment that has yet to be solved. The bro and I then proceeded to listen to music while I baked cookies, made pizza sauce, pizza dough, got drink ingredients together, and generally prepared for the twenty plus people who were to trickle in that afternoon and evening. Before he arrived I had spent several hours cleaning the house and organizing for the party.
One thing about parties at my house is that you never know who is going to show up and what is going to happen. Since the weather turned out unseasonably nice, the bro and I built a fire in the fire pit and that's where the first half of the party commenced with the parents, our auntie, @jacobtothe, and our son before he headed off to work.
As the chill and fog descended, we moved that party indoors and that's when a whole lot more people showed up, neighbors we haven't seen in a hot minute, friends we hadn't seen in almost a year, and a whole gaggle of animated young adults arrived with our daughter and her boyfriend.
It was an animated scene.
Food and drink were ingested, stories flew, and me, well, I bustled about, sometimes grabbing a seat for a minute to chat with one of the guests before I was summoned for a fork, or a plate, or some other form of hostess inquiry.
Mom made my brother's favorite cake, a Susie-Q cake which is a chocolate cake adorned with a cream filling type fluffy frosting. The cake is a specialty of Mom's and I will freely admit I partook in a small piece, even though I am paying for my indulgence in the worst possible way today.
After hours of cleaning, cooking, directing, and revelry making, I finally collapsed into bed sometime past ten. The hubs had retired earlier as he had to coach a match out west of Spokane early the following day. As I stretched out in bed, the corg protesting at my side, I had myself a good smile, for even though my carcass was all manner of tired, my brother was full of smiles and good humor. Considering the week, and really, the year he has had, I feel like all the work that I put in yesterday was beyond worth the labor. It truly was a labor of love and so worth the sore throat, fever, and flu I have today.
Sacrifice and discomfort in the face of bringing joy to someone who is downtrodden, especially a loved one or family member is kinda awesome. But you'll have to excuse me, I need to go take a nap now.
Thank you and hiiiii @ewkaw!!!
